D-Link DIR-601 version 1.01NA , Fri, 29 Jan 2010
I'm setting up a 601 as a "Wireless Access Point" on an existing wired network (LinkSys BEFSX41 router). I got it basically working yesterday, though it took a whole day to climb the learning curve. I am quite a NEWBIE in wireless, and I only got into this because my daughter (1000 miles away) gave me an iPod Touch 4G for my birthday/Father's Day so that I can FaceTime with my 3 year old granddaughter!!! My only "security" measure for my new wireless net was to set the Transmitter Power to "Low" (LOL) ... how's THAT for hi tech!
So now I'm trying to beef up the security. Since the iPod is the only device on the wireless network, I decided to try setting the mac filters. I put in the iPod mac address, and immediately when I saved it, I couldn't get into the router with the host system I was using for the console. Duuuh ... I figured I had to ALSO put in the address of the host system as well. So, I went through the whole reconfiguration again, and this time I put in both the host and the iPod mac addresses, but again, I couldn't get into the Configuration Screen with the host machine. Yuck! I hope D-Link says something about the status of mac address filtering, because it is either royally fouled up, or impossible for a normal user to figure out.
Blessings in abundance, all the best, & ENJOY!
