Everything doesnt work. Upnp , raid, refreshing, etc.
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:39:44 AM »

Im really sick of this device.  I bought it to store some media and stream it to my xbox so my computer didnt have to be on all the time.  I set it up with Raid 1 with two 500gb drives and updated the firmware first.  I copied everything over and then tried to stream things to my 360.  Nope.  After reading here I saw some restrictions on how folders had to be set up and file names so I spent all day yesterday moving and renaming 300 gb's of video files.

I then tried to refresh the Upnp server, about 4 times.  Ie, firefox, safari.  No dice.  I thought maybe a reboot would help things out.  Restart the services etc.  Well heres where the fun part comes in, my nas comes back online and instead of my drives being raid 1 they are now both seperate drives.  Both containing the same thing, but the raid has been broken.  HOW IS THAT EVEN REMOTELY ACCPETABLE.  So now if I want to make them raid 1 again I have to copy everything off, reformat, and copy them back.  That is totally not acceptable for a device.

Oh also, the upnp server still isnt working correctly.  It is showing all the files from how they were organized 3 days ago and wont update itself.

And finally, how is it that once I create permissions for a user I am no longer allowed to set a folder as access for everyone.  I want to keep a private folder with subfolders with access for different users but also a public folder for my xbox to view files from.  If I create users for the private folder then I can no longer use the upnp?

If you RAID1 becomes "Degraded" there is an option under Tools<RAID to manually rebuild you raid. Did you try this function?

The issue you have been seeing when you add a user to the network access rules and can no longer create a folder for "All" is a bug and will be fixed in the next firmware. However when you are using the UPnP AV media server on the DNS-321 the folder containing your media does not need a set permission it is set share to the device connecting to the DNS-321 UPnP AV media server.

The raid doesnt appear as degraded.  It doesnt show that it is raided at all.  If I browse the device it shows volume 1 and volume 2 now.  It was mirrored before.  It appears that it broke the mirror and now is just showing it as two seperate disks.

Also, Since I cant set permissions correctly, I have everything as full access to everyone.  I didnt create any users or rules.

My network is on 192.168.66.xxx.

If I set the upnp server to root on volume one it wont refresh and shows the old files.  If I set it to a folder on volume one same thing.  I then set it to volume two at root it then updated my server.  Some things play and some dont even though they are the same file type (all AVI) and are in the same folder.  Is the next update going to fix any of this?

Do you have the option to manually rebuild the RAID where I directed you?

For your issue with the UPnP AV media server do all these files play on the device you are using if you use the USB port for video playback on the device. If it has one of course. They may be the same file extension but can be very differently encoded.

If he is asking about his DNS-321, why are you asking about playability over usb when the DNS-321 does not have a usb port?

The device used for Video playback that is accessing the UPnP AV media server may have a USB port for video playback. This will show what files the device can playback natively. The DNS-321 does not play videos.

There is no option to manually rebuild the raid.  The dns treats it as if the raid never existed.  When the drives are accessed they are volume 1 and 2.

As far as the media goes, all files could be played on my xbox when they were streamed from my computer.  When I try to stream the same files from the dns to the xbox, only some of them work.  Why would the same files when streamed through windows folder sharing (the older method for 360) and Windows media player 11 (the newer method) work, but not with the dns.

Hmm thats strange. I guess you only option is to remove on of the drives and do a low level format in your PC then insert it back into the DNS-321. It will prompt you to format the drive and ask if you want to create a RAID1 configuration with your existing drive.
