DNS-323 Not Being Recognized via Easy Search Utility
« on: January 26, 2009, 04:32:18 PM »

Hello all.  I'm new to the DNS-323, and started setting up today.  My setup is as follows...
-Brand new DNS-323
-1TB WD harddrive
-FW 1.04
-Connected to Linksys 54GL with Tomato 1.23
-Windows XP
-Search Utility 4.4

Problem:  The Easy Search Utility is not recognizing the DNS.  I checked my device list on the router, and it is showing up, but just not showing up on the Easy Search Utility (even after upgrading to 4.4).  I checked Windows Firewall, and the ESU is on the Exceptions list.  If I type in the IP of the DNS, the web sign-in shows up on a webpage.  So it seems as though it is being seen, just not by the ESU.  I would like to map the drive, and from what I read, the ESU is the only way to do it, so I really need it.  Am I missing a setting on the router that I need to change (I'm not a tech expert, but can get around ok)?

I called Tech support, but all they told me was to upgrade to ESU 4.4.  The other two times I called back when that didn't work, they dropped my call while on a long hold time, and I'm just getting frustrated at this point with the support.

Any of your help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

I don't know much about custom firmware for Linksys routers, but it seems that would be a good place to start.  Would it be possible (for troubleshooting purposes) to flash your router with Linksys firmware and try again?

However---

The Easy Setup Utility was designed to help you easily identify the 323 to get you logged into it the first time and to install the BitTorrent application.  Other than that, it's one of those 'use it once' applications you'll never really need again (unless BT gets updated).

If your DNS-323 is working with the default IP, it's probably working as it should.  Speaking of firmware, try updating the 323 to 1.06.

I had the same problem. My fix is to disable Spybot - S&D. You may want to check if you have Spybot or something similar running.

Thanks ttmcmurry and oMac.  I tried a friend's laptop, and now the ESU finds the drive and I'm able to map (once I disable anti-virus).  I still can't get it working on my computer.  I'm assuming it's anti-virus, but there's no way to turn off the Trend Office Client (office computer).

Does anyone know if....
1) There's anyway to turn off Trend Office Client
2) Map to drive without using the ESU?

Thanks again for all the help.

Trend office client is designed to be setup by your IT department.  I'm under the assumption this is your company's computer and not your own (correct me if I'm wrong).  They probably have you locked out from making any changes for occasions just like this.  :)

The ironic twist is I'm one of those IT guys who sets up security products and locks out those kinda changes; so I totally know what it's like on the admin and user side of an issue like this.

Thanks for the reply ttmcmurry.  It is my work laptop.  I have to transfer files between my desktop and laptop for making presentation and pdfs all the time, so I thought this would be an easier and faster solution (also wanted to share my iTunes library between the two computers without putting it on the laptop).  I'll just have to check if my IT department will allow me to map it, but from the sound of it, if the IT made it only admin rights only, then I'm doubting it now.  Man, what a waste of money, unfortunate.  I was so excited.:(  Thanks for all your help!

Ok, I was able to disable the firewall and all other components for Trend OfficeScan and turned off Windows Firewall, but still not showing up on ESU.  Any ideas what else it could be that I may be missing?

Thank you.

can I ask what you're trying to accomplish with the ESU?  Like I said earlier, you don't really need it.

I just want to map the drive.  Everything else I'm able to do via the web browser.  Is there another way around mapping to a drive letter (I want to specifically change it to drive letter H) without using the ESU?  Without me being able to map it, it is not showing up in My Computer, so I cannot access the files I have on the harddrive (I used a friends laptop to put some files on the DNS to check).

Thank you.

Within Windows Explorer, Tools/Map netword drive.  Choose "H:" for the Drive letter and Browse to  Network Places for the DNS device.  Map to the folder of choice.

And if you really want to go old skool...

Open a command prompt and type:  net use h: \\<ip.of.your.323>\Volume_1

STR3T's suggestion is probably a much easier way to go about it.  :)
