Raid 1 issue
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:04:37 PM »

I use a dns-323 for backing up important info from several computers. The dns is setup as a Raid 1 and every few weeks the plan is to switch out one of the 2TB hard drives and put it at a building complete separate from the office (safety first you know). I then put another 2TB hard drive in and auto-rebuild matches them automatically. So basically, I have 3 2TB drives, one of them getting pulled out every few weeks and the 3rd being put in. The problem is that the name of the drive seems to be switching. The volume was originally called Volume_1, after the first time putting in a new drive it got called Volume_2, and now it's back to Volume_1 again. This complicates a lot of things because all the computer's have backup software that point to Volume_X\etc.. and if X is switching all the time that means I have to manually go and configure that for all 6 computers. So does anyone know why the name of the drive would be switching? So far I've always taken out the drive on the right side so I don't see how that could change anything.

It all depends on which one you pull and where they were when you originally formatted them.

This is not an advisable strategy as drives are not meant to be inserted and removed with any regularity. I would expect one of the plastic bits to break or the connectors to fail at some point. This is a low end home-use device.

Other options, not necessarily great either, would include manual/automated copy between drives, but configured as non-raid or using the USB port for a removable drive.

Personally, I picked up a second DNS323 and rsync the important data between units. No drive removal required.

3 x DNS-323 with 2 x 2TB WD Drives each for a total of 12 TB Storage and Backup. Running DLink Firmware v1.08 and Fonz Fun Plug (FFP) v0.5 for improved software support.

Actually it shouldn't make any difference which drive is swapped - assuming the entire drive was used to create the array, you should have a single volume - Volume_1, and swapping either drive, should, result in the exact same thing happening - the newly inserted drive should be formatted and then synced with the existing drive.

Whether this is supposed to be happening or not, it still is. I just switched out again today and now it's back to Volume_2 when has been Volume_1 for the last week. I'm going to try to start switching out the left one from now on just to see if I can get a change.

Oh - I'm not doubting that it's happening.

What I will tell you is this - you're using RAID1 to achieve something it was never intended to do - so you really should expect strange "quirks" and if an incorrect volume name is all that's cropped up, consider yourself lucky - search the forum, you'll find that other users have not been as fortunate.

Thanks for the info fordem. The longer I'm using the dlink like this the more I'm coming to agree with your statement that I'm using it "to achieve something it was never intended to do." I'll be switching to a more stable solution soon. (Probably 3x2TB drives, one in the right stays permanently, no raid, just use a incremental backup based off the right drive, and switch out the one on the left every week or two and leave it somewhere secure.)

Why don't you just get a 2 GB drive and put it in a USB caddy and use that for your off site backup?  It should solve the problems you are having.  In fact get two of them fore use on alternate days.
