Whats the point of having RAID-1 if replacing a drive means reformatting both drives and backing up the drive on the NAS??

This has been a total waste of time. Has anyone had this issue resolved??

If it says it wants to format both drives then you have either replaced the wrong drive or you have a hardware problem.

I have removed a drive and replaced it with a new one to test the NASs response and I just formatted the new drive and restored the array without problems.

I assume you marked the drives position before you removed them for testing and replaced the good drive back in the correct slot.  If so what do you see on the web interface with just that drive in place?

Another thing, RAID 1 is NOT a backup so you should have a tested backup anyway.

When I ran RAID1 I too had to replace a drive. The text messages were a bit misleading and I was worried both drives would be formatted but it is fine. It rebuilt the RAID array and my data was safe (I did of course have a backup elsewhere). Since then I have broken the RAID on purpose and RSync one drive to the other during the night.
