Firmware 2.01 and 3TB drives
« on: July 07, 2011, 12:13:29 PM »

Has anyone been able to set this up with a single 3tb drive?

I updated to the beta firmware and I formatted the drive using the DLink utility. It shows 3TB available on the DLink console but only about 700GB is usable when I hit it through my Windows machines. I took a peek at one of the folders and saw that its formatted to EXT3 but when i check the file system of the network drive it says NTFS.

Any ideas?

Haven't tried a single 3TB drive, but 2 seems to work pretty well, but with some quirks... :)

Recently bought a dns-320 and two dirt cheap 3TB WD30EZRX (WD Green Caviar).

Anticipated lots of problems since the Advanced Format drives are incompatible with just about everything i can think of.

Formatted the drives as one mirrored partition, which seemed ok, but Vista32 and my old TViX 4100 could only see it as a 750G drive.

Figured it could be some problems with 32-bit clients, so tried again with 2199GB mirror + the rest as JBOD, and it seems to work ok!

My TViX gets confused about large file sizes via samba mounts, but NFS seems ok so far.

Still wondering if one 3TB partition is possible somehow... Perhaps in the next firmware release?

I worked with Technical Support on this for a couple of hours. I eventually got bumped to a Senior Tech and he basically explained that even though the release notes said that it would support 3TB drives, it was not guaranteed since it was only a beta firmware. I tried to drill into the Tech Support for more details but I couldn't get anything for certain. I was asked to just keep checking the site for the official 2.01 release. I was, however, able to confirm that my Hitachi 3TB drive should be compatible once they ship this 2.01FW out the door. Of course, no promises from DLink hahaha.

I'll post here again once I can confirm it to be working for my DNS-320.

From past experience, I can tell you that D-Link is rather diligent in ensuring that beta release functionality posted on these forums does perform properly. However, every now and then some unexpected bugs come up. A data critical functionality such as 3TB support was more than likely exhaustively tested prior to the beta release and should be stable (albeit, no guarantees from me).

I have the same drive and a similar setup using the 2.01 beta fw.  I have 2 hitachi 5K3000 3TB Coolspin drives installed and set to RAID 1.  Everything looks good from the webUI but the drive shows up as 699GB on Win7 x32, Win7 x64, and XP.

I am playing around with creating two volumes right now.  I setup 2000GB as RAID 1 and the logical drive now shows up as 1.79TB (NTFS ?).  I am trying to configure the remaining 1997GB as JBOD like the previous poster but it appears to be hanging at 0% with formatting volume_2.  I don't care about mirroring a lot of my media as I have it backed up elsewhere and would prefer the extra space to stream music and video.

Really hoping the final FW release is going to support these drives soon as I'm hesitant to put any data on at this point.

??? OK running into further trouble with this setup and not sure how to proceed.  The second volume (volume_2 with 1997GB) that I am trying to create is still stuck on 0% formatting.  The WebUI does not seem to allow me to get past this. It keeps going from initializing at 0% directly to 0% formatting and hanging there.  The drives now show as none instead of 2000GB Volume_1.

I tried system restart several times from the GUI successfully but each time I log back into the WebUI it goes back to the formatting pop-up.  The disk activity lights are on solid with no blinking.  It's been this overnight and I'm not sure how to fix the problem since I a disk management raid setup and format again.  I have already run the S.M.A.R.T. utility against both drives overnight and passed previously.  I tried a cold reboot of the NAS with a 5+ second hold on the power button with no response as a last ditch effort but have not pulled the plug yet.

Any ideas??? Stumped.

Another update.  Decided to pull the power plug on the NAS, after calling tech support (9pm PST) and them refusing to provide 'service' or advice for this device as they said it was not on the approved list (offshore call center).  After pulling the plug the system finally reboot correctly.

Realized I checked off the option for "leave remaining space for future" the first time i set the volume_1 size for RAID 1 inadvertently.  This time I set volume_1 as 1997GB for RAID 1 and left the rest 2003GB for JBOD (software automatically does this).

Results were better than before.  I now have 2 volumes.
From the WebGUI:

From any PC connected to the NAS (My computer):

Is windows recognizing the full capacity of the drives?  According to a GB to TB conversion calculator I should have 1.918 TB for volume_1 and 1.927 TB for volume_2.

Possibly a beta FW issue to be ironed out still?  Thanks for any feedback, I'm sure there are others out there trying to get these 3TB drives working with this NAS!!!

Any clue when the new FW will be out?  I bought this NAS as a small temporary device to be used until I upgraded to a 5 or 6 disc device in a few months for a growing small office after our previous WD NAS died.  I've already had to send back 2 2TB WD Green Cavier Hard Drives that were incompatible (F$%^% WD) and have been spending a considerable amount of time to compile all of our office info onto the two new Hitachi 3TB Drives I got for the NAS (Mirrored as RAID I).  Well, I just hit 750GB and imagine my surprise to find that the device is only registering 750GB instead of 3TB...  This sucks.

D-Link typically does not communicate the release date of new firmware releases, nor are the users in this forum privy to D-Link's release schedule for firmware updates. I've seen firmware updates ranging from several weeks to almost a year apart.

Newer products typically have faster release dates for firmware updates.

I'm not entirely sure, but it might have something to do with the 32 bit addressing limit in the client OS / network driver support etc.

Did you try accessing the nas from a true 64 bit client?

I had the same problem, and solved it by partitioning 2199GB as Raid1 + the remaining space as JBOD.
