   I've been trying for some to use a Lexmark X5650 multi-function printer on the printer port of my DNS-323.

I'm currently running version 1.07, and trying to use the printer from a desktop running 64-bit Vist and a laptop running 64-bit Windows 7. I do have NETBIOS enabled as well as printer sharing. 

The indications I get are that I can see the printer on both machines and print jobs are added to the queue, but they never print.

Initially, I had forgotten to turn on printer sharing on the Vista desktop and after the print job was queued, I would get an error popup stating that the printer couldn't communicate with the computer, and the printer queue showed that the job was being cancelled automatically. .

As for installation, I have installed the latest software package on both machines, and successfully printed from the laptop to the printer with a direct USB connection.  But when I try to connect via the USB port on the DNS-323, I get no output.

About the installation, I used the instructions found elsewhere on the web site, and when the printer was detected, the driver files were not found.  However, when I explicitly pointed to the folder containing the "LXDUprc.inf" file, the installation completed OK, and the printer appeared in my list of installed printers.

I've seen other posts referencing a SharePort application.  Is this something I need to get to get this working?  Those posts were not about the DNS-323.

Is this a GDI printer?  If it is I don't think there is a way of using it from the DNS-323 because these brain dead printers rely on the computer to be able to work.

OK, GDI is a new term for me  Obviously it has nothing to do with the fictional GDI or UN's Global Defense Initiative featured in some films...

But I will try to find out from Lexmark.  Since it is an MFP, and can handle a lot of it's functions like copying, faxing, etc. off line, it must have some smarts built in.

Shareport is not required to use the USB port on the DNS-323 as a print-server - as it's name suggests, it's purpose is to share the USB port as a USB port.

It might be worth you while to use it since without it, you'll be unable to use the multi-function aspects of the printer.

If you haven't come across a set of instructions that I wrote on getting the print server functional, search for it (you can search by post author and keywork), if you don't find it let me know - essentially what you do is install the device connected directly to the computer and then connect it to the DNS-323 and edit the port settings in the Windows printer properties.

For a multi-function device you may need to disable bi-directional communications in the driver, as they are not supported by the DNS-323 print server - they are however, supported if you're using Shareport.

I'll search later and let you know if I found it or not.

Disabling the bi-di isn't a problem if I can get iot to work with SharePort, as I don't really expect (or want) to  be lugging the laptop over there if I don't have to.

OK, I tried searching before and found that you are a prolific problem solver    and I'll have to examine the responses closely to find what you wrote on the subject.

I did find some SharePort files in the ftp section under the multimedia folder (thanks to another post, because I would never have thought of looking for them there).

After reading a few posts, I'm a bit confused about what is installed where.  In addition to what is installed on the pC, I have seen comments about something that is needed in the firmware on the DNS-323 for it to work.

But I haven't found anything that identifies at what level this support was added.  I'm at 1.07 on the DNS-323.
