Please Help...
I have a DNS-323 HW-b version.
Running firmware 10

I returned from vacation to find it switched off (It doesn't auto restart after a power failure.)
When I powered it back up, I knoticed that the log said my left hand drive has failed, and the Raid1 has degraded (obviously)  but both lights are still blue.

The GUI says it wants to reformat and rebuld (which I cancelled)

But the strange thing is that my Volume-1 is now gone.  The only thing I can find via the "network" access is the BT folder and the web_page folder.

I thought the purpose of the Raid1 is so that if one HD failed, the other one will take over and continue to work seamlessly.

I thought I understood this thing, but I have searched and failed to find this exact problem.
Perhaps I gave up too soon.

Any suggestions? I am taking it slowly because I don't want to make things worse.

Thanks.

First up use the reset button on the back of the unit.

If that doesn't cause Volume_1 to reappear then try the 'SATA/USB caddy plug into PC' and see if you can read the drive (if you are using windows you will need to install Ext2ifs, or equivalent, to read the drive) also note which slot each drive came from.

If neither drive contents is visible then you will have to rely on your backup to restore to newly reformatted drives.  On the other hand, if you can read everything on one drive then you have the choice of replacing the defective drive and allowing the rebuilding of the array or keeping that drive as a backup and use two new drives in the NAS and copying the data over.

Update:
I entered the GUI and had to link the Volume_1 to my username AGAIN.
It has done this several times.  But it is back again and I can access it.
I don't know why it keeps disappearing.

More updates later....
