DIR-655 will not connect to other PCs
« on: August 16, 2011, 10:06:52 AM »

I had a dual channel netgear n600 set-up at 2.4 GHz working with three machines. I replaced it with the DIR-655 using my laptop to get better signal levels on one distant PCs . I setup the router from the laptop (win7)  with the DIR-655 connected to the Cable modem output and did the set-up. Used the wizzard and the laptop is now  working fine on the wireless network .  Then  went to other machines and the wireless signal as indicated by the laptop was fine. I reset the networking details on these PCs (Win 7 and win XP) and used the assigned network name, dlink, the security / pass key and same WPA security as prescribed on the DIR-655 router - to set up the network connection on these machines. The network adapters are fine on these machine but they will not connect to the dlink router. The win XP PC sees the network but the Win7 machine will not even see the network.   Have doubled checked all the settings and I cannot see that anything is wrong with the settings ????? Note I do have an apple iphone that seems to be picking up the signal fine. Have  turned off the  modem and router numerous time but still have same problem. Any suggestions ???

At one point I had to return to the preset DIR-655 settings since the ID and pass word I had set would not longer allow me to access the router ????? I also notice that one D-Link panel says the UID is Admin whereas it was originally shown to be admin but could not be changed ???

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. Auto TPIK and AES.
Change the SSID wireless name to something other than dlink, might be other routers near by with the same name. Make it something unique or fun. Can be anything.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Netgear 600 dual band router installed only 3 weeks ago worked fine on all machine - it seemed to have the newer WPA2 security settings and that router was set to a WPA+ WPA2 security mode. This Dlink DIR-655 does not seem to have the WPA2 security setting????

Here is some info to your Q's in BOLD

What HW version is your router? B1
What FW version is currently loaded?  2.00NA - did check for firmware updates and this is most recent v

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? - COMCAST CABLE
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?  BUILT IN ROUTER
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? MOTOROLA SURFBOARD 5100

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? HAVE TO CHECK
Turn off QoS options. WILL TRY
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option. WAS TURNED OFF
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. WILL TRY
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. THIS IS INTERESTING, isn't this handled by AUTO obtain IP address?
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. YES
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. WILL TRY

What wireless modes are you using?  MIXED G&N (have an older adapter in win XP PC)
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. Auto TPIK and AES. - DOES NOT OFFER WPA2 only WPA

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. THIS IS INTERESTING, isn't this handled by AUTO obtain IP address? It is handled by the router assigning a open or free IP address however it's preferred to have the router reserve the IP address for each device so they have there own IP address that never changes and helps in trouble shooting. Also good for setting up rules. Should the IP address change for some reason, this breaks the rule you set up.

What wireless modes are you using?  MIXED G&N (have an older adapter in win XP PC)
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. Auto TPIK and AES. - DOES NOT OFFER WPA2 only WPA. I believe Usuing WPA or WPA Personal is the same as WPA2. AES is preferred security however some older devices don't support AES.
