DIR-651 Refusing Local Connections
« on: August 22, 2011, 08:19:05 AM »

Hello, I hope this subtopic is suitable, I couldn't find a section for the 651.

Alright so I have an SSH server running on my network. I can successfully connect to it from a local computer using the server's internal IP address, AND I can connect to it from a remote computer using the server's external IP address (it's properly port forwarded).

However, when I try to connect to the server from a local computer using it's external IP address, I get a connection refused error. :-\ Is there something I'm missing?

What router options are you using to port forwarding the addresses? Virtual Server, Application, etc?
What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Whats your hardware revision. Loopback was removed with the later models due to Dlink thinking there were "security issues". The current work around is using your own local DNS.

Okay,

I set up the forwarding under the "Port Forwarding" subpage.
Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.00NA

Internet provided by Cox Cable,
Motorola Surfboard 6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Standalone Modem

QoS: Off
Advanced DNS: Off
(DynDNS updating) ON

And I couldn't find DNS Relay anywhere but it's possible I missed it somewhere.

Having loopback disabled seems like the logical culprit, does my HW version fall into the later models? If so is there anything I can do to re-enable it?

One more thing, how does this router fair with DD-WRT or the Tomato firmwares?

DNS relay should be under Setup/Network settings.

Ahh, I forgot this is a DIR-651, not a DIR-655. I don't think the DIR-651 was ever compatible to begin with. Atleast as per this site.

As for dd-wrt, I don't think it's compatible. dd-WRT compatible routers.

You may have to settle for a work around or think about adding some hardware to your network.

Hmm I never realized loopback wasn't a standard feature hah okay then thanks for the help I'll just use local addressing when at home. Just out of curiosity, adding what kind of hardware are you referring to?
