Trying to Hookup DGL-4500 to DGL-4100 PLEASE HELP
« on: August 14, 2011, 08:17:16 AM »

Hi,

Im trying to hookup the dgl-4500 to the dgl-4100. I need wifi for a few devices. The problem is i just cant replace the 4100 because thats the router being used by the person im renting my room from. So i need to know how to hook up the 4500 to the 4100. Any help would be great. Im really lost on this one. I tried turning off the dhcp and putting in the ip as a static ip but nothing.

Thanx For Your Time & Help

Well you could just replace the 4100 with the 4500 as if you set up the 4500 like the 4100, they wouldn't now any differences. The 4500 is a follow on to the 4100 and has some better features.

If you really need to have the 4100 with the 4500, I would recommend either setting up the 4500 in the DMZ on the 4100 or making the 4500 an access point for wireless only by connecting the 4500 LAN port to the LAN port on the 4100.

I recommend using the 4500 as the primary router though. Could keep the 4100 as a back up.

I would connect the 4500 LAN port to the 4100 LAN port. I would put what ever IP address you get on the 4500 and put it into the DMZ on the 4100 so that you get everything from the internet and bypass any 4100 processing.
Then set up the 4500 wireless for name and mode, recommend using Single mode G or Mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz if you have devices that supports N.

If he has a 4100, what is he using for wireless? Nothing?

4100 is a stand alone router, no WiFi FYI.  ;)

I know. Hence why I asking what he was using for wireless. Maybe he didn't  have wireless until he moved in? Or are you replacing what he had for wireless? Or are you adding the 4500 in addition to a wireless he already has?

Another suggestion would be to get a wireless AP device like a DAP-1525 and connect to the 4100 instead of trying to make a 2nd router in to a AP. DAPs are easier to work with.  ;)
