Just sharing my experience of using the DNS-323 as a media server for a PS3...pretty positive overall so I'm happy enough.
The 1.04 firmware upgrade means that the PS3 can now access video and photo content served up by the UPnP server built into the 323. So far I've tried MPEG-1 (from backed-up video CDs), MPEG-2 (from backed-up DVDs) and some WMV-HD sample content too. It all works flawlessly.
What it doesn't want to do is serve out music! When I go into Advanced->UPnP AV Server on the 323 and kick off the 'refresh' to build the content index that is used by the PS3 (or any other UPnP clients you may have) it seems to fail if the shared folder hierarchy contains DRM-protected tracks from the iTunes Store.
The simple solution was to re-org the media folders on my 323 so that my 'Video' and 'Photos' folders are under a 'UpnpShared' folder, leaving the problematic 'Music' folder in my top-level 'Media' folder. It is this new UpnpShared folder that I now share using the UPnP AV feature. So my hierarchy now looks like:
Volume_1/media/Music
Volume_1/media/UpnpShared <- I've made this the UPnP AV share root
Volume_1/media/UpnpShared/Video
Volume_1/media/UpnpShared/Photos
I realise this is a pretty obvious work-around but no harm posting anyway just in case somebody is scratchin' their head!
Hi, I have just got DNS323 but i am unable to setup UPnP AV Server... can help me with the following?
1. what are the player able to detect UPnP AV server?
2. Does UPnP av server suppose to appear like a itune server to itune player?
3. does it matter where i point my media folder for video, music or Picture?
4. can i use a mediaplayer 11 on XP to connect to DNS323 as a media server or just add share folder?
5. i have got a HP notebook with Quick Play... Qucik Play detected DNS323 but cant load media from video, music and picture folder.... any special setup to connect dns323 or i did not setup dns323 correctly?
