Help w/ setup of shareport w/ two routers
« on: January 18, 2011, 09:15:55 PM »

I have read through all of these threads and while some people seem to be asking the same thing they are very confusing with how they describe it and nobody seems to have an answer for them. I'll try and make it as brief as possible and as understandable as I can. I have a simple home network with two routers. The reason I have two routers is so my D-Link can always be connected to a VPN and anything that connects to it thinks that it is in the US because I am overseas. For the sake of this thread though I will not be connected to the VPN. It will just be operating as a normal router and this works just fine when I have the connection set to DHCP instead of a L2TP connection (VPN). If I can get shareport to work like this it won't make a difference if the router is logged into the VPN or not because I'm just concerned with what's going on inside my house.

I have a broadband connection to my first router which I will call router A. The IP address of router A is 192.168.1.254 and everything that connects to router A is assigned an IP of 192.168.1.xx (We can call this Network 1)

I have a D-Link DIR-628 which I will call router B that is plugged into router A. (We can call this Network 2) The IP address that router A assigns to router B is 192.168.1.67

I can wirelessly connect to either network just fine (network 1 or 2). If I connect to Network 1 (router A) I can log into the router and view my home network and I can see the DIR-628 (router B) that has an IP address of 192.168.1.67

While connected to Network 1 I cannot log into router B by typing this IP address into a browser which I presume is normal. But if  I connect to Network 2 I can log into the router by using the IP address 192.168.0.1 which is the routers default IP address. Everything that connects to this router (Network 2) is assigned an IP address of 192.168.0.xx

If I'm connected to Network 2, shareport works as advertised. No problems. What I want to do though is not have to be directly connected to this router to use shareport. Since network 2 is downstream from network 1 I would think that it should be able to somehow see the router (which is does because it has an IP address assigned to it: 192.168.1.67) and I should be able to use shareport.

I have gone into shareports options and tried adding the different subnets/IP addresses to the device servers. I don't have the software in front of me but I'm sure you all will know what I am talking about. I have tried using 192.168.1.67 (router B's IP address assigned by router A), 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.255. I thought one of these three choices would have worked.

I don't know if there are some settings I need to tweak around or if I need to open certain ports to allow the information to be passed between the two routers. Maybe this won't even work, I don't know. I am assuming it will because the option exists for different device servers/subnets/etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.
