[SOLVED] Cannot connect in N-mode with Intel 4965AGN
« on: January 02, 2010, 11:20:39 PM »

I installed an Intel 4965AGN into my Dell Inspiron (running Windows 7) to connect with 802.11n to my D-Link DIR-655. It refuses to connect in N mode, it will only connect in G mode. I have tried everything I could find online. I set security to WPA2-AES, and even tried with no security with no luck whatsoever. Before the 4965AGN i had an Intel 5300 which had the same problem, but I returned it because I thought it was a problem with compatibility with my Dell. Apparently something else is the culprit. What could I be over-looking?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I found the answer on my own. I don't know why this answer was so hard to find because it is so simple. In case anyone is having similar problems:

Click on the "Advanced" tab. Click on "Advanced Wireless" on the left. Enable "WMM".

And that's it. Viola.

Thanks a million for this post. I was going to take this router back to Best Buy because I couldn't connect in 802.11n, but could to other routers. This solved my issue, I now connect in 802.11n and see speeds up to 300mbs. Thanks again.

No problem. I had so much trouble finding the answer. I knew other people would have similar problems. I don't know why this isn't in BOLD letters during the setup or in the router settings menu. Seems like a pretty important thing users should know about.

Because theoretically WMM has nothing to do with the way wireless connections are initiated/connected.

WMM is a way of prioritizing packets in a networkstream...

If I turn off WMM my 4965agn will refuse to connect.. that is _possibly_ b/c the settings for it show WMM enabled on my PC.. I've never encountered WMM before, but this seems like something that should be a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have... but its acting like a need-to-have.

And that is most peculiar...

Its not a huge deal, but the bottom line is that it is necessary that WMM is enabled to be able to connect a device in 802.11n mode. Therefore, the user should be made aware of this instead of having to search helplessly online for something that is basically not documented at all. That's all I'm saying.

Is WMM not enabled by default? Just curious.
