Drive support for 3TB Hitachi
« on: August 24, 2011, 08:14:39 PM »

I have two Hitachi 3TB HDDs in my DNS-325, but the device fails to properly format them to the correct size. After properly setting up the device, selecting RAID1, partitioning for 2996GB (the maximum possible size), the drive only shows as being 731GB. What gives? Is this a bug? Is it a known problem?

The partition shows as being incorrect in size in both Windows and other operating systems.

The NAS shows the drives themselves as having a proper capacity of 3000GB:
Hitachi    HDS5C3030ALA630    MJ1311YNG1Z1SA   44°C / 111°F   3000 GB   Normal
Hitachi    HDS5C3030ALA630    MJ1323YNG18VHC   44°C / 111°F   3000 GB   Normal

There are no errors in the RAID type:
Current RAID Type
Volume_1   : RAID 1 (Completed )

Yet, after formatting, both Windows and the "Storage Status" graph on the "My favorites" tab in the firmware both show the incorrect capacity. I've tried reformatting them as RAID0 and JBOD and they all have the same problem. Any ideas?

Well, I guess the answer was always looking me straight in the face. The beta firmware apparently has the solution, so I guess the new question is: when will it be ready??

Did you upgrade the DNS-325 firmware to the latest beta version? The latest beta firmware adds 3TB support.

The latest beta firmware is available here: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=38854.0

Update: Once you upgrade to the latest firmware, you will have to reformat the two HDDs to take advantage of the full 3TB.

I am still having an issue with the updated firmware. Now I am getting the correct capacity (it wasn't working before) being reported in the Firmware web interface, but the Samba/Windows Share interface is still reporting the wrong capacity. Help?

You formatted disks again after updating the firmware?

To xpmps's point. You need to format your 3TB HDDs after upgrading the firmware to the new version that supports 3TB HDDs.

I reformatted the drive after upgrading the firmware. I even tried RAID0, JBOD and splitting it into a 2TB/1TB set of volumes... all didn't work.

Right now I'm trying to setup NFS to see if that module has the same capacity problem.

I have an exact same problem with RAID1 setup of two 3TB WD30EZRX discs in DNS-325: The NAS formats hard drives just fine and shows the full capacity of 3000GB in the ShareCenter, but only 699GB can be seen in Windows (various versions on different computers from XP to Win7 x64). Windows shows file format as NTFS which is wrong.

I am at FW 1.02.

Spent at least two hours on a phone with Dlink, climbing up through support layers all the way to Senior Specialist. Their only response was that the tech support was not given guidance on how to handle Beta FW issues and a promise to call me back once any such instructions were to appear.

Any better solution from anyone would be highly appreciated.

I am currently working to see if there is a workaround. Perhaps I have to use NFS or something like that to make it work, or even a third party plugin. I will keep this posted on my results.
