Web Surfing Shuts Down, Everything Else Stays Ok
« on: August 27, 2011, 10:39:05 PM »

I am ignorant with networking.  The most I know is /ipconfig.

I am stationed in Japan and have a fiber modem going into my DIR-655.  For about two years everything has been fine...no problems ever.

About a month ago, I started getting timeouts and page not found errors when surfing the web, but my online games (EVE, WoW, etc) and our Xbox360/PS3 work fine.  The only thing I could think was to unplug and plug back the DIR-655.  Sometimes that works for a day or a week, but ultimately it always comes back.

It gets frustrating because if my kid is on the Xbox or if I am playing an online game, I have to disconnect those sessions in order to power cycle the router.

Is there a setting on the router I can change to avoid this, or a software command I can issue from the computer to clear something?

One simple test you could try is, when it happens, see if you can bring up a webpage on the PS3 browser. If that works, but internet on your PC doesn't, try other things that use internet on your PC. Does email work? AIM? If that works, and not your browser, its probably a issue with your PC. If those things don't work, but the PS3 browser does, then try rebooting. If that does work, then it's probably your DHCP lease. In which case we will give a suggestion later on how to fix it.

power cycle the fibre-modem also...leave it off for like 5 minutes...

A little more drastic might be to re-load the current firmware your router has....I did this on my own 655 once and it fixed whatever it was that was making me angry at that moment....

I use OpenDNS for my DNS setting in the router setups....Maybe your ISP is having DNS issues....

I have the exact same problem and it is annoying.  Everything stays connected and I'm unable to open new web pages.  It happens at least twice a day now and this happens on every computer (11 of them) and our 4 mobile device .  I tried dhcp release/renew, ipconfig dns flush, tried opendns and still no good, and advance dns is already disabled.  The only thing that seems to work is a reboot or to power cycle the router.  Also, if you do nothing and wait about 10-15 minutes it will work again if you don't want to kick anyone off their games.  I had it for almost 4 months and it happen just a month ago.  At this point I'm just going to get a new router.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
