i have a WD My Book Live and it's connected to my DIR-825. i'd like to configure the router to allow FTP access to the NAS from the internet. the drive has an option to enable FTP in it's configuration, but i have not done this before and i don't know what to do to create a solid/secure FTP portal so that i can access my files remotely.

how do i configure the router for this ? my router is set to DHCP and i have turned MAC filtering on.

any tips would be greatly appreciated ... in particular i am looking for the ability to transfer/copy files from the drive, and not allow any modification/writing to the drive from the outside.

I think I can help ya with this...as I just set up Filezilla on my server at home for access for others to access my external USB drive. Do you use Filezilla?

no, i never really used FTP before. i am aiming at setting it all up via the router and NAS ... i also don't keep my computers on all the time, but the drive is on all the time.

is Filezilla required on the machine i will be FTPing from ? if you would give me some tips on router settings i'd appreciate it. would it be ok to set the NAS to a static IP mode if the network in general is on DHCP ?

Ya Filezilla is used as the client and has a Server. Not sure about NAS however I presume the NAS has some form of FTP services what work as the FTP server?

I recommend setting ALL your devices to reserved IP addressing, this helps in troubleshooting and each device keeps there own IP address that never changes.

I setup my FileZilla server using the following under Port Forward:
Rule one:
Ip address of my server

I forwarded port 50117 on both TCP and UDP.
Sched Always, Inbound Filter Allow All.
I designated 50117 in Filezilla for a port to connecte too. Not sure if this is needed on the NAS or not.

Rule two:
Ip address of my server
I forwarded ports 20,21 on both TCP and UDP.
Sched Always, Inbound Filter Allow All.

I presume that the IP address would be the address of your NAS?

i set up DHCP reservation and assigned IP addresses to my devices via the router. i haven't yet set each device up with a static IP, but i don't think i'd need to since the router assigns the same IP address each time the device connects.

one thing that i find odd is that i've assigned an IP to my printer, both on the router and on the printer, but the router is showing it as having an IP of 0.0.0.0 in the LAN computers list.
also the names shown under the LAN computers list are not the names i've assigned in the DHCP reservation listing.

You only need to reserve IP addresses for devices on the router, not at the devices them selves, this includes printers. Let the router handle all of the reservations. Set the devices for auto obtain IP addressing.

that's what i did, all clients are dynamic (i set each one to DHCP), reserved IP's in the router ...

as for the printer, it still displays itself as IP 0.0.0.0, not sure why.

as for FTP, i want to use SFTP protocol with filezilla client, since i don't keep my machines running all the time, i want to be able to access the NAS remotely when my computers are off. so should i go the virtual server method or port forwarding method ? i created an account with dlink's DDNS service, but haven't created a domain yet because i'm not sure about what IP address to choose for the service.

if i create a virtual server or port forward rule to allow access to ports and the NAS, would i need to add the MAC address of the machine attempting to connect via SFTP ? or is MAC filtering only for my side of the internet ?

I can't say if Virtual server would work better for you or Port Forward, all I know right now is that I have my Server set up at home that has FZ server loaded and I used Port Forward on the router to ensure that other FZ Clients could connect once I set up user accounts for those allowed access.

Mac Filtering I believe is only for the LAN Side.

Since you're working with a NAS, FileZilla server is not an option. The NAS is self contained with it's own OS and no means to install apps (unless developed specifically for that device).  Once FTP is enabled, an FTP client is not required. You should be able to navigate to the NAS by entering the FTP address in a folder window while in Windows Explorer.

I looked at the WD Book Live user manual and the device seems to only have an "FTP Enable" checkbox, but I did not see any settings for FTP (unless the manual was just written too vague). The question here is, does the WD Book Live have an internal FTP Server? If so, there should be options to add user accounts, set permissions R/RW, and identify directories for sharing.

Are there more FTP settings than the manual illustrates?
