Remote Administration problems 615 Rev 3 Firmware
« on: March 06, 2009, 09:05:44 AM »

I'm trying to use the "Remote Administration" feature of the router (615 with Ver 3 Firmware) and I have a couple of questions

1. The manual indicates that I must use the same IP scheme on the remote computer and the router along with port 8080.... Does that mean use the ...
A... Same Public IP of my Comcast Cable Modem? 56.X.X.X
B... Same Private IP of the 615 router? 89.X.X.X

2. Is there anything else which must be enabled or configured for the remote administration to work   ie Firewall settings

Thanks in advance

For Remote Administration, you need to use the Internet public IP of your Comcast access or sign up for a Dynamic DNS service.

Also, an IP address of 89.x.x.x is not a private IP address.  Private IP addresses are special IP ranges that ICANN (??) has reserved for setting local area networks (LAN.)  Private IP addresses can not bee seen directly on the Internet, without using a router to NAT "translate" to a valid public IP address.

Yes but the fundamental question of "The IP addresse sceme on both remote computers must be matching" hasn't been clarified??

The private IP address I'm using IS valid... I've been using it quite successfully. The private address used on my internal LAN can be one of my own choosing.

The address does not matter.  I have been using the Remote Administration on various D-link routers for year from different public IP addresses.  Some matched but most did not.

As for the private IP addresses, the established private IP addresses ranges should be used.  If you happen to use a public IP range, as a private one, you can have web access problems.

Established Private IP address range

Class A    10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255     =  16,777,216  "addresses"
Class B    172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255     =  1,048,576  "addresses"
Class C   192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255  =   65,536  "addresses"

Success!!  All that I needed to do was include the "full" http://X.X.X.X in the browser. I wasn't doing that since my other router never required it.

THANK YOU ANGEL... 2 level Tech Support   I wish I had got you in the 1st call. I spent over 3 hours with "other" techs, doing things like upgrading the firmware and a bunch of other unnecessary steps.

Problem resolved
