before i purchase
« on: October 30, 2011, 12:08:08 AM »

New to this forum, seems like plenty of response.  Hope you can answer few of my question before i decide to buy this modem.
Currently getting 12mb from my internet provider. I have 4 computer in the house and 3 of them always stream video and cost my computer and my ps3 very slow.
1. So can this modem solve this by giving more speed to my ps3 and computer?
2. If i set my 1st priority for my ps3 and 2nd priority for my computer, if im not using my ps3 will my computer   become my 1st priority?
3. I see theres a gamefuel option, can i set both xbox and ps3 in gamefuel?
4. Can this be done if my ps3 is wireless?
5. I have a qwest modem/router already, do i still need it or dlink modem will replace it?
Thanks.

1. First, this is a router, not a modem. That becomes important later on. As for "more speed", the router is no magic fix. It will not give any more speed then that is going into your modem by your ISP, and probably less then. It can be help with traffic priority, but that is more specific to the upload and not the download. It can give priority, but if all your devices are on and your total bandwidth consumption is greater then what your ISP can provide, there will be lag. QoS helps, sometimes alot, but it isn't 100%.

2. Don't think of it so much as priority for certain devices, but certain traffic types (protocol and port) that are coming out of those devices. For instance, you can say give traffic used for multiplayer on a PS3(UDP on port 5223) priority over web traffic for your computer (TCP on 80) but if you set your PS3 to First priority and 360 on 2nd priority, their really isn't going to me much of a difference. Its a scale of 1-255. So a 1 digit difference is almost identical.

3. Yes, as long as they are using different ports, you can distinguish them. If you have two 360's or PS3, you need to use UPnP, since the router won't know the difference between the traffic coming from both of them.

4. Yes, you can set QoS(AkA Gamefuel) on wireless devices. All Wireless (WLAN) traffic goes through the network (LAN) to get to the internet (WAN), so if you set prioties on traffic from LAN to WAN, it will effect wired and wireless equally. The router also has WISH, which is wireless Gamefuel, but that is for traffic between computers on your LAN. Like if you have a wireless media server, and want to give priority to certain devices to access it. Since everything is on your LAN, it isn't going from LAN to WAN, so Gamefuel doesn't apply.

5. Qwest is Cable broadband right? Then yes, you will still need your modem. But do you have a modem, or a modem router combo? What is the model number?

I know this wont give more speed to my connection im currently have (12mb) but i want more speed goes to my xbox and ps3 and 1 of the computer and less for other.  Sometimes i get a message from the modem config menu saying "Traffic is overload, disconnect one of the line with heavy traffic", so will this help by giving the heavy traffic line with limited speed?
I have a dsl modem/router combo, so do i still need to combine the two?

Do you still need both? Yes. The router has no place to plug in a phone jack. So you plug the phone jack into the modem/router gateway, and then plug the gateway into the router. To be honest though, if your reason that you buying the router is to limit bandwidth to one connection, your wasting your money. Putting priorty on a traffic type does help define bandwidth, but it does not limit it.

Also, if you have a gateway from your DSL, getting a extra router will give you all kinds of issues. Maybe look into getting a DSL modem/router gateway that can do what you want? First call your ISP and see what they offer, and see if they allow you to buy your own. If so, research what is good. A quick google found Asus DSL-N10. DSL Modem/router combo, Wireless N, and bandwidth allocation. I would usually post a Dlink product, but I can't see anything on their NA site that is N. Only G.

It's recommended to bridge the DSL modem/router so that it passes all the data traffice to the 4500 router so it can handle the traffice management.

Yea, but he is trying to do traffic limiting, not traffic prioritizing. As far as I know, the 4500 can't do that.

wow this is more harder than i thought.  For example, if i set up gamfuel, all the speed will go to that and whatever is left will go to the other computer right?  That what i meant by limiting other computer.
I dont really want to limit other computer but if im gaming i just want more speed goes to my ps3. So will it do just that?

Hey, my modem i have now will do priority port already and i dont know how to set it up but i can call tech support but it will cost 30 bucks.  Will this feature same as dlg-4500?  Should i try?

This router doesn't have any limiting functions. You can prioritize items you put in Gamefuel, like PCs and game consoles together so if someone is gaming, the PCs can get good internet as well. You should have someone use Teamviewer.com and review your router settings with you.

I want to check if my modem is compatible before i even start. For example, i have a linksys router right now, it have a internet port and 4 port, my modem have 4 port.  How do i connect them together?

You would connect the Linksys routers LAN port to the back of the ISP Modems LAN ports.
