Because I don't use my DNS320 everyday and I don't want to manually turn it off every time. I've set my DNS-320 to shutdown every night at midnight.
But a very annoying thing I've noticed is that everytime my DNS-320 shuts down, it will first start up both hard drives, before shutting down.(When it shuts down, the drives do turn off)
I guess the mechanism is that the hard drive goes into "stand by" or "hibernation" after 5 minutes of inactivty (Default setting). And when you shut down, it has to write something back to the drive.
Seems like a wasted startup and shutdown of the drives and over time will cause the hard drive to fail more quickly.
Why not shutdown the drive right from sleep/standby/hibernate mode.
My hard drive is not quiet either. Always makes a really loud click when it starts up or shuts down. (hopefully it's not failing yet) But at this rate, if the drive keeps starting up and shutting down, it will fail sooner than later.
