dns343 users and groups problem

Hi-have a dns343with v1.03 firmware.
Been running without users/groups fine.
Yesterday tried to set up 7 users with various rights to folders.
Weird.
I can see the users are assigned to a group with rights to a given folder.
Then when I add another group with some various number os users - the first group 'loses' some or all its users.  I go around chasing my tail and the users drop off the groups.
There's no documentation I can find to help setup so I'm just creating users then a group and a folder they can access...btw first of all I removed the defaul ' access everything by everyone' rule as per the screen help prior to creating the users and groups. I did a reboot but no solution.
Any ideas??
