Seagate SmartAlign vs Advanced Format
« on: December 07, 2011, 12:02:10 AM »

I notice there are a number of users with Seagate ST2000DL003 drives in their DNS343. Although these are not on the Compatability List, this hasn't stopped some users. My question here is about 4K sectors, and why SmartAlign doesn't get the bad press that Advanced Format seems to. Is SmartAlign technology supported in the DNS343? If so is there a specific Firmware level?

Some ShareCenter owners have used 2 TB (max size) HDDs with SmartAlign in Standard Configuration, but I would be very cautious about using these HDDs with RAID (of any flavor), and there have been no posts regarding the long term stability of these HDDs in "any" configuration (RAID or otherwise).

Unfortunately, there is no firmware version  that explicitly addresses Seagate SmartAlign, by name. The only reference from D-Link regarding handing of non-standard HDD formats is "Advanced Format" in firmware beta v1.05b01.
