Erratic connectivity issues
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:45:39 AM »

My DIR 825 has been going wiggy on me. Tonight is the last straw. I can connect to it and login to it wirelessly. But once I connect it to the Cable modem, I cannot connect to the Internet.  Connectivity dies.

Speedtest results have usually been excellent, 20MBps or better. But connectivity with this device has always been spotty, sometimes great, other times very chancy.

As of right now, I can connect to the router wirelessly. But when I plug the Ethernet from the Comcast cable modem back into the router, Internet wireless connectivity dies, and even a wired connection to the wireless router fails. I've tried two different Ethernet cables from the cable modem to the router. Both work. I've tried connecting to the router using Ethernet. That too fails. Any and all suggestions welcome.

DIR 825 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.02NA

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 or 5e recommended.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Let us know.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Here are the specs for the Comcast cable modem:

ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 / PacketCable 1.5 Touchstone Telephony Modem
HW_REV: 3
VENDOR: Arris Interactive, L.L.C.
BOOTR: 1.2.1.25
SW_REV: 7.1.103
MODEL: TM722G

It does not have a built in router.
I have already tried two different Ethernet cables between the modem and the router, and have verified that they work.
The DNS setup was working fine up until recently.
The QoS setup has never been changed, but I have disabled it per your recommendation.
Advanced DNS is not enabled.
DNS Relay is already enabled.
DHCP Server (dynamic IP) is enabled.

Wireless mode is 11bgn.
Security mode is AUTO (WPA or WPA2) - PSK.
Wireless devices vary: 4 laptops, 2 desktops, 2 Ipads.
1 cordless house phone. No change here. Same phone / same modem & router all worked fine until this problem.
There is an Apple router next door on Channel 6 and a TrendNet router next door on Channel 1. I am running the 2.5G band on Channel 11 and the 5.6 band on Channel 36.
I have been testing with a single device. I'll try again later this morning w/o anti-virus enabled.

Off to a meeting, will  check back in later this morning (California PST).

Thanks for the assist!

Ok, Just FYI, have seen numerous problems with Arris Modems not working well with external routers.
Do you have you home phone thru the modem as well? If you do then there is a chance there is a router built in to the modem.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Change the wireless modes on the 2.4Ghz radio to Mixed G and N and single N on 5Ghz radio. No need to broadcast A or B modes if you don't use them.

Keep us posted. Maybe someone can use teamviewer and review your router settings with you.

I had phone service through Comcast but they were charging $40+ / month on that, so I switched to AT&T minimum base package for $12.95/mo.

I have had prior problems with Comcast's modem conflicting with a Linksys router. I was losing my connection up to 5+ times per day and had to repeatedly manually reboot the router. Took me 2 years to isolate the problem. Only figure it out after replacing the router and still had the problem.

The manual DNS is set up. I used OpenDNS.com for filtering purposes.

If there is a router built into the modem, can I attach my Trendnet TEW 837AP Access Point directly to the modem?

I have set the 2 channels as directed to the modes suggested.

Ok, it looks like the router is back up.

As long as I have your attention, can you recommend the best configuration for me utilizing the following hardware?

I live on 1 1/2 acres in a rural area. I've had connectivity issues around being able to establish a good connection with the Dlink 825 router from only two rooms away, I have an extra Linksys router sitting idle. I ran some Ethernet from the Dlink router down the hall to my office where I connected the Linksys router (having diabled DHCP on the Linksys). However, I wasn't successful in connecting it at first--I think the Ethernet cable I made was bad. So I bought a Trendnet TEW 837AP access point to boost the network's range. The access point has helped.

We run up to four laptops and two desktops on the network, two Ipods, along with a Playstation 3 (wireless) and an Xbox (wired). My sons complain about wireless connectivity issues with the PS3 so I ran Ethernet to it. I've run out of ports on the Dlink now.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I recommend doing this. Get your self into a Motorola SB 6120 or 6121 cable modem. I recently got the 6121 so I have both on a 50Mb/2Mb internet service. Both are great modems and perform well and work well with external routers. Other people use them and enjoy them greatly.

Yes you can turn the Linksys router in the an AP and make it wireless. You can even use the same SSID on each AP including the host router, however just make sure each device is set up on different channels.
I would use Mixed mode G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode G on 5Ghz radios. If you don't have any supporting 5Ghz devices then theres no need to have this ON and you can turn the radio off.

Since you seem to have more wired devices and running out of LAN ports on the back, thats ok, get yourself into a external Gb network switch. I have a 24pt coming off my 825. I connect up all essential wired devices here. For gaming consoles I connect them directly to the router do that QoS can manage the traffic there and gaming won't interfere much with the devices on the switch. Having a external switch on the network is preferred and help eliminate router interference on devices that don't really need any router management. The switch allows networking between devices more smoother and seamlessly.

For the game consoles review the gaming sticky for setting up QoS for XBL and PSN. They work well. I need to update PSN soon. You can find the PSN sticky over on the DGL-4500 forum.

Let us know how it goes. Can use teamviewer and review your router settings with you.

Thanks for the advice. So a switch is preferable to a router for wired access? Do i wire the switch into the router or vice versa?

Are these good switches?

TRENDnet TEG-S80G Switch 8-Port Gigabit

NETGEAR GS108 Desktop Switch ProSafe Gigabit

Are there any brands you recommend given the brands I'm already using?

I just want to say that the folks on this forum rock! I posted my query on another web site and got NO responses! So thanks for your responsiveness and sharing your vast knowledge!

I received the switch you recommended and am preparing to install it. I understand I wire it into the Dlink 825. I also have a Cisco Linksys WRT310N and a Trendnet TEW 837AP Access Point. My goal is to move the wired connections (Xbox, PS3, possibly a DVR or TV) to the switch, and to improve wireless connectivity. My house is 2700 sq ft. The cable modem / Dlink router is located near the center of the home in a bedroom closet. My office down the hall (and through four walls) gets poor wireless connection, and my bedroom (adjacent to the office, but at the foot of J pattern, removed from the Dlink router) gets at times very poor wireless connection.

The Dlink router has a USB port capable of supporting a USB hard drive, and I have external hard drive (Buffalo HB250U2-WR) that I use for backing up my office PC which I am considering attaching to the Dlink router.

Given the network hardware I have available, can anyone make some recommendations about the best configuration? I've run an ethernet cable from the Dlink router to my office, with the intention of hooking up the Linksys rotuer there (having disabled DHCP). My goal there was to network via ethernet a Canon MF3240 multifunction printer to the Linksys router, allowing anyone to print to that printer even when the office PC is not powered on.

To add more complexity to the mixture, I also bought a Axis 1650 Print Server some time ago. It have connected it successfully to the Canon MF32400 printer, though it does not allow individuals to use the scanner mode on the printer from any PC/Laptop. (Ok,sacrifices must be made-- I have another scanner!)

Here's a summary of the hardware:

The DVR is not a priority. My immediate goal is to get the wired devices onto the switch, the Dlink 825 connected to the Linksys router in the office, and the Canon Imageclass attached to Linksys router.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Are you wanting to run 2 routers at the same time here?
Are you using the phone system through the arris modem or just only internet?
