Connection speed problem /w ps3
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:26:48 PM »

New to forums but anyways i had this problem where my internet dropped alot while playing ps3.
i switched from my horrible d-link router to a DIR-655
Since i bought it, i've never dropped but my connection speed is an issue when playing my ps3

I use a wired connection through my router
some periods during the day it's 2 mbps download.. that's really slow considering my computer has 20 mbps download through wired connection
some periods during the day it runs fine @ 4 mbps - 5 mbps download (this is fine for gameplay but it lags a bit)
if i directly connect my modem to my ps3 - it goes 20 mbps download (amazing fast speed)

I called d-link technical support and did everything from port forwarding to turning on DMZ and putting my ps3 IP in there

I have a 2 part question: is there anything i can do to boost my ps3 connection download speed as high as it would be if it was connected straight to my modem while using a wired connection to my router? if that's not possible, is there anyway i can keep a stable download speed @ 5mbps?

try turning off QoS. There is a sticky over on the DGL-4500 forum that deals with PSN. Might help some.

First, what are you using to test your speed. The speed it gives you during a connection test means almost nothing. Its better to do a test in the PS3 browser (make sure you have the latest PSN update) and pick the same server as the one you did for the computer. That will give you a apples to apples test.

Second, the best thing I have found for performance is to use a static DNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 . This is google's DNS. Granted, there are other DNS which may or may not work better for you, but it's a good place to start. Having a static DNS helps with how long it takes between boot and signing in, but doesn't do anything for performance. Just make sure you have a DHCP reseverations so any gaming rules/gamefuel rules/etc you put in place apply to the PS3. Also, if your your on DSL try setting your MTU lower. There are complex test you can do to see exactly what your MTU should be, but try it at 1400 and see if its better.

Last, when ever changing any PS3 settings, to a Easy connect first, reboot, then do a manual setup to change the settings. I find with my PS3 slims, if I have a manual connection setup and change a setting, it doesn't apply. I haven't figure out why yet, but I have seen it happen on other's PS3 too.

There's a section about gamefuel, looks similiar to QoS.. should i just ignore that section and disable QoS?

I've been using connection test in the ps3 menu, i'll try using the browser
I've been using speedtest.net on my computer, it doesn't seem to work on my ps3 because i don't have flash
do you have any suggestions to speed test website that works on ps3?
I followed the guide that furry redirected me to. I'll try inputting Googles DNS and lowering the MTU to see if that helps

if you only have 1 PS then you can disable QoS for now.
I would use NameBench, googles DNS finder utility program to find the best DNS addresses to use.
