Hi Guys,

I've had my 323 for a while but never got round to using it. I've got 2 x 2TB samsung drives which configured and worked ok when I set it up initially months ago.

I've just tried to power it up and connect to it from my iMac but it never showed up so I downloaded the Easy Search Utility v4.7.0.0 and when I ran the software it picked up my 323 with the default 192.168.0.32 IP address and came up with a Volume_1 but it wouldn't let me assign it.

I messed around for a while and ended up defaulting both my 2TB drives with G Live software to the EXT2 format and put them back in my 323.....only now it won't show me any volumes to map?

I've tried holding the reset button on the back of the 323 for 10 seconds to reset it and the ESU detects the unit but won't show either of the 2TB harddrives.

So I'm looking for the best way to wipe everything 323 & both my 2TB drives and start from scratch, only issue is I've got a iMac and a borrowed Windows 7 Netbook.

Can anyone advise what I might be doing wrong or alternatively a way to wipe everything and start a fresh....there isn't anything important on the 2 harddrives.

Cheers in advance
Baws

Some additional information would be helpful.

When you connect to the unit, the firmware installed on the system is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.  The latest official release is 1.09.  Many 2TB drives need to be formatted with the Beta version 1.10b7.  So I think it would be best to play it safe and have firmware 1.10b7 installed before you format the 2TB disks.  For firmware see the Sticky Topic: DNS-323 Resources link.

You MAY want to select Tools/Defaults/Restore to restore the system to the factory default settings to before going through the firmware upgrade.

Added on 11/26/2011:

If your disks are on the approved list and you want to reformat, you can do that by going to Tools/Raid and follow the steps.

And, if you have to return the Windows machine you are using to run the Easy Search Utility and the DNS-323 does not use the default IP address, I have found a simple OS X utility that will help locate the unit.  Search for "angry ip scanner".

If you formatted the drives outside the DNS323, then you have to reformat and configure through the web interface to create samba volumes.

I did but I reformated them to an EXT2 format using the G-Live software as I thought the 323 would recognise that format..... Would it not?

I can't connect via the web interface either, that's why I was wanting to wipe everything back to scratch and start a fresh but even that's proving more difficult than I thought it would sadly.

No, the DNS323 must partition the drives and install a few files on it. It is a Linux standard drive (ext2 or ext3 depending on F/W) and therefore can be read if installed in a linux system, but must initially be configured in the NAS. If the DNS323 is booting under those circumstances, the web UI will be prompting to format the drives for use. Is your system on the same subnet? With formatted drives and the reset, everything will be "virgin". The web UI also creates the shares, so obviously no external access until that is done.

Ah righti see.

I reformatted the drives to EXT3 and then I reset the 323 by holding reset button for 10-15 seconds until the led starts flashing on the front and ran the Search utility again but it didn't even pick up the 323.

I've borrowed another windows xp laptop that I had to reinstall XP on so it might be something with this laptop as it bare now.

I can run my 2TB drives through the GLive software again as I noticed it gives you an option to leave the drive 'unformatted' rather than making it EXT or FAT etc and see if my 323 will pick it up them.

I'll report back and cheers for the advice so far

Just a gentle bump  :)

The G Parted Live software again gives you an option to leave the drive 'unformatted' rather than making it EXT or FAT etc

If I return the drives to the unformatted state will my 323 see then as new drives and format them like on the original install?

Thanks
