FTP Group Access to specific folders
« on: December 06, 2011, 01:20:49 PM »

Hey,

I'm using my DNS-320 as a FTP-Server with the following folder structure:
Volume_1/Folder-1
Volume_1/Folder-2
Volume_1/Exchange

With this structure I want be able to make the Exchange folder available for some specific user - but only the Exchange folder, not Folder-1 and Folder-2.
Therefore I've created two Network Shares
1. Volume_1
2. Volume_1/Exchange
and the following two groups:
1. Full (access to all folders)
2. Exchange (access only for Volume_1/Exchange)

For the group "Exchange" I have denied the access to the Network Share "Volume_1" and defined Read/Write access to the Network Share "Volume_1/Exchange".
Unfortunately it does not work as expected. The users assigned to the group "Exchange" are not able to access the Volume_1/Exchange folder.

Is there any way to restrict the access for a specific group to a specific folder (e.g. Volume_1/Exchange)? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help

Hi,
I am a little tired right now, but if I understand you correctly and you have written the second share exactly as stated, i.e., "Volume1/Exchange", I think by including the "Volume1" in that share, you included all of "Volume1", but you have a conflicting rule in the first share.  Thereby denying access to your "Exchange" group.  Try deleting the "Volume1/Exchange" share and make create a new share, but this time make sure you just highlight the "Exchange" folder when you do. In other words, you should have 2 shares, "Volume1" and "Exchange".  I hope this helps.  Good luck.

Hey,

first of all thanks, for your help.
"Volume_1/Exchange" that's the path of the 2nd share. So I have one share for the root "Volume_1" and one share for the exchange folder "Volume_1/Exchange". I don't think there is another way to create a share. When I create the Exchange share only the "Exchange" folder his selected.
I also tried to create just one share with the path "Volume_1/Exchange" but then access is denied.

Hi again,
I was a little confused by your use of the path vs the share name, but now it is clear that that is not the issue.  First, I should say I am running 2.02. I have one of my 320's set up as an FTP server for various family members with 2 groups.  One group is just for myself with "full" access, the other is "read" only for the various family members and then a 3rd share for one family member with full access to one folder.  This is working ok for me and everybody has the assigned access.  So, I am scratching my head why yours is not working.  The only things that come to mind are something with the permissions you have assigned to the various users/ groups.   The other question is if you deny access to "Volume1", this might over ride allowing access to "Volume1/Exchange".  The thing is that if you only want a user to access the "Exchange" share, you just give them access to that share with whatever permissions you want, you should not have to "deny" them access to anyone as they will only be able to access the "Exchange" share.
