A couple if questions / situations

I recently updated one of my 323's to version 1.06 firmware. I offloaded 450+gb of data, flashed the new firmware, and put the data back. No problems.

I find several flaws with version 1.06 of the firmware which have been reported on the forums so no need to list my problems.

Question is: I know it is recommended but is it really necessary to re-format the drives (going from 1.06, back to 1.05)? You can imagine how many hours it took to move 450+gb of data (twice).

Second situation is:

I have an older 323 and the hd lights have gone really dim. One a few months ago, the other recently. I'm pretty handy but I can find no information on replacement led's. Does anyone know of a source & part number? Or even specifications required?

Start by reading the firmware notes - if they don't instruct you to format, then don't - and as far as I know a format is not required with either 1.05 or 1.06 - although that could depend on where you started.

If you were using 1.01 and the ext3 file system that was available - an upgrade to any later firmware will require a reformat because support for the ext3 file system was removed in the 1.02 firmware and has been omitted from all later versions to date.

If you were using 1.03 and are upgrading to any of the later versions a reformat will be required, due to a change in the partition structure introduced with the 1.04 firmware.

Changing between 1.04/1.05/1.06 does not require a reformat and all I would do is backup the data (as a precaution)  before flashing the firmware.

Thanks... It says on the firmware download page to reformat the drives after changing firmware.

Better safe than sorry but it literally takes hours to move data back & forth + setting up shares again after a format.

I'll go back to 1.05 without a new format & keep my fingers crossed.

I mentioned that in my post - although I had the fw version incorrect - read it like this...

IF you're upgrading from 1.00 or 1.01 AND if your hard drives are formatted in EXT3 - you need to meet BOTH conditions.

All you need is to make a backup, for safety sake.

The above was stated directly above your quote. No matter, just a bit confusing.

Anybody have any information about replacement HDD led's?

What that recommends you do is backup your data - it does not mention anything about reformatting your drives.

If you had firmware 1.03 or above you do not need to format it is recommended to backup the data in case of any complications. Earlier firmware will require you to format the drives. firmware 1.04 and above requires you to format under this firmware for Unicode Support on the drives. I would recommend Formatting also if using firmware 1.03 as well. so 1.04 and above you should be OK however I would a always recommend to backup the data but it is not going to delete the data from updating the firmware.

I'd appreciate any info you could give. Without knowing the specs, I would be guessing. These are "bi-color (5mm)" led's but there are many different kinds. Some change color by having a common anode and supplying voltage to one (of  the two) cathodes. Others change color by changing voltage or polarity.

My older DNS is out of warranty and if I screw it up, it is my problem. If a search is made on the "net", there are many, many complaints of the same problem. Replacement led's for us "do it yourself'ers" would be great.

Any word on LED specs? After searching, there may be several users who would appreciate the information.
