DNS231 or DNS 323
« on: March 27, 2009, 07:37:11 PM »

Hi
I am thinking of buying either the DNS 321 or the DNS 323 and would like to know which one is the newest model?
Thanks

Why does it matter which one is newer?  This is an industry where product should be chosen based on how well it meets your needs.

Essentially the difference between the two is that the DNS-323 has a USB port on the back that can be used to connect a printer, which can then be shared, or a UPS, so you can have the DNS-323 shut itself down properly during a power failure, and also a bit torrent client.

If any of those features is important to you, you get the DNS-323, if not, you can save yourself a few bucks and get a 321 - if it were me, I spend the extra and get the 323, just for the added flexibility.

The other features are pretty much the same - they use what is essentially the same software.

Oh - to answer your question - the 321 is newer.  The 323 was released in late 2006, the 321 was released in 2008.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

I bought my 321 based on this review:

I don't own a 323 to compare the two, but I can only imagine the firmware is a little more polished on the 323 seeing how it's been out longer.

Tell ya what just made me jealous of the 323 owners is that Vista gadget I just saw.  Lets ya keep an eye on the 323 w/o logging into a webpage.

Now I feel like a kid and gotta have that.  However, like youth I'm too lazy to do anything about it MYSELF.

OP - Seriously though, as mentioned - if those features are not vital the 321 is a great value.  (at least in the months I've owned mine.)

The 323 does not seem to have some of the firmware flaws that the 321 has.  Most notably, whenever you add a user or group to the network access list, you lose the ability to make shares available to All Users.  You also lose all of the shares you currently have (not the data, just the shares).  This bug is still in the beta for the next firmware release, so I do not know if it will be resolved.

Both products have a limitation in that a user can only be the member of one group.

I have both the 321 and the 323 and prefer the 323 even though I don't use the USB port.  The 323 does not seem to have the fan on problem and using the funplug, I can set the speed of the fan on the 323 vs just off, medium or high speed on the 321.

The front cover comes off easier on the 323 as well.
