Volume number moved with drive?
« on: November 25, 2011, 04:02:44 PM »

I was experimenting with my NAS before I wiped out what was going to be my primary drive in the NAS.  I moved my 250g drive over to slot two, inserted the new 1TB drive in slot one and went through the setup.  It looked as if it was going to format my initial 250gb by the prompts but did not.

I now have my primary named at Volume_2 even though it is in slot 1.  The original hard drive retained its name and data.

Reading through the forum I have noticed you cant name the drives.  Is there a trick to get back so what is primary can have the name Volume_1 (since i t is on the right)????  My usage intent was that everything from the server is to be maintained on Volume_1 and Volume_2 was just going to be backup of the critical stuff from Volume_1.

Could I pull both out, format them in windows and insert and then they would loose their volume names?

Thanks!!!

The DNS-320 formats HDDs using the Linux file system and will not recognize Windows formats. The names "Volume_1" and "Volume_2" are linked to the slot the HDD is located and have no association to the HDDs themselves. The same naming convention holds true for all DNS models.

I am running firmware 2.02.

As an FYI I experienced something different IF you have already formatted a drive in slot one (using standard drives).  Scenario of my testing (I was careful, of the L and R sides right on the tabs in the unit):

1.  I formated a 250GB drive and put it in right slot for testing.  Drive became volume_1
2.  After testing wanted to move forward with setting up.  I took out the 250GB put in a 1TB in the right slot, formatted, and it became Volume_1.  I then spent a lot of time transferring all the data.
3.  I went to add back in the original 250GB (as a standard drive) into the left slot and the original 250GB became volume_1 and the 1TB become volume_2.
4.  I then switched the Volume_1 right side with Volume_2 left and again the original 250GB becomes volume_1.
5.  I have switched sides with my two drives numerous  times and the 250GB always retains Volume_1.

So as a summary:
My original hard-drive no matter where I place it always retains volume_1.  Any single drives becomes volume_1.  I realize there should not be anything on my hard drive that over writes the volume names but it appears to be by the way i set them up and am working with the two drives.  Yes, I can tell by the files on there which one is which.

Just for my own preferences my 1TB is the one I wanted everyone in the family to use and Volume two was going to be a redundancy write protected drive for backups of just the critical stuff (photos, docs).

My only option appears to be just to reformat my original 250GB in a windows pc put it in and then let the NAS software format the second drive.

Does anyone know if I do this if it will the Dlink setup software try and format only the "new"250GB drive in the left slot and not disturb the 1TB (keeping things as standard drives)?  I am very concerned the software may try and format both.   My 1TB is almost full, I do not have enough disk space elsewhere to back everything I have moved over to the 1TB without buying more drives.

Thanks!

If you place a drive inside either of the bays and power the unit on it will become Volume_1. Then power the unit down and place another drive in (formatted or not) the other bay it will become Volume_2 when the unit is powered on.

Yours seem to be formatted already so the one you want to be Volume_1 put in the bay you with to use (only the single driver) and boot up the DNS-320 and power it back down once it has completely boot up. Then put the drive you want to be Volume_2 in and boot the DNS-320 again. That should set your Volume_1 and 2. It seems like you may have been missing the step of booting the unit up with just the single drive and back down, without moving the drive to the other bay. Volumes will the setting for which bay they are in unless boot up in the other bay with only the single drive. Formatting should not be a concern once the unit has been boot up and the Volumes established.
