new box - not able to connect
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:12:46 PM »

Hi,

A friend sold me his old DNS-323 and I am excited to have it.  However, I'm not having much luck getting it set up so far.

I read the manual, put an old 80 GB drive in it, connected it to my router (via CAT-5) and powered it up.  The blue light is on and the small network and HDD icons are lit up.

Other than that, I've not been able to do anything with it.

I have tried the following:

1. Installed and ran the Easy Search Utility - Device cannot be seen.
2. Opened my router's web-based manager and looked for connected devices.
After some quick tests I concluded that it is in fact connected, on 192.168.1.5, with name =
    ([88[Yq*Whi*4i*
3. Tried connecting directly via a browser; e.g. type "http:\\192.168.1.5" into browser - browser returns
"This page is not found."  or "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 192.168.1.5"
4. Tried connecting via Win 7 "run" console - windows responds with
"The remote device or resource won't accept the connection."

I'm not sure if I've been able to reset it to factory or not... not seeing that in the manual anywhere. I did hold down the reset button for 10 sec and it went through what appeared to be a reset cycle.

Maybe I am wrong about #2 above, and I'm not actually connecting to the box at all???  I noticed that
the MAC reported by the router for the device on 192.168.1.5 does not match what's on the bottom of the box. Unit case label = 001E58B147DD but router says B8:FF:61:CA:C1:FE

Need your ideas for how to get this working, please!!!

Thanks in advance for your time.

p.s. I also tried connecting to it at 192.169.0.32 and was not able to get a reply that way, either.  I guess that's not surprising given that my router doesn't see anything connecting via that ip address...

Can you check in your router to see if it has assigned an IP address to the NAS?

Q:  Can you check in your router to see if it has assigned an IP address to the NAS?

I checked again and now I see that the NAS is definitely *NOT* connected to the router.

I guess that puts me in the same situation as the other poster in this topic area - mops33.  I'll read his thread again.

First thing, check the unit is working by connecting directly to a computer then using your browser to see if you can connect to http://192.168.0.32

If you can't connect via a direct connection then there is no way you are going to connect through a router.

If you can connect via the direct connection then you two options, set up the 323 for your network via the web interface or do a reset to factory defaults and then see if you can find it over the network.

Looking at what you are seeing I tend to think the 323 is setup for a different network to what you have and when you resolve the miss match it will start working over your network.

Thanks a lot for your comments!

I re-did the reset, correctly this time, and now I can see the NAS.

I think I must have reset it while it was in standby or not fully started up yet.

Once it is powered all the way on, holding reset button in (with pin) for at least 5 seconds gave me a reset.

The box came up on 192.168.1.13, which was surprising...  Either

a. I didn't get a full factory reset?  or,
b. This is an older unit, from before the default ip ended in .32

Either way, it is working now and I'm much happier  :D
