any ideas about ftp
« on: February 25, 2009, 02:25:26 PM »

Hey guys, trying to set up ftp here. The situation is the following:

I have plugged in the DNS-323 on a network run by a Dell server running windows 2000. I set up ftp on the DNS-323, but nothing so far. It looks like all the computers come out on the internet with the same ip address, as I tried it from www.whatismyip.com. Inside the network all the computers, including the DNS have their own ip addresses. I tried both the inside and outside ip address with port 2121 (random), but nothing. Do I have to go in the server and change something? If yes, what?

You have a NAT router, it shares a single public ip address amongst all the internal hosts - you need to forward the port you are using to the DNS-323's internal address.

I suggest you test for access from within the network first and don't even think about the remote access until you have gotten local access.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

the ftp works great within the network, just tried it. Where do I forward the port, in the dns-323 or the router? I dont think I have access to the router.

it has to be done in the router, there will be a section call port forwarding, that's where you want to do it
