I just bought a DIR-601. It comes with an installation process on CD.

The process fails at the point where I make the connection from my DSL modem to the DIR-601. The installation program reports that there is no internet connection.  (Note that to get this far in the installation process the installation program has already tested for a valid internet connection before the DIR-601 is inserted into the chain)

Although the LED on the front of the DIR-601 indicates it is getting an internet connection from the DSL modem, it does not pass it on to my PC (already connected to the DIR-601). My PC reports "no internet access".

How do I remedy this?

You may have to restart the computer, DSL modem and then the 601.

Have you tried that?  If not, give it a go and then get back to us.

The process is to power down your PC.  Power down the modem and router.  Then power up the modem, wait until it is stable (about a minute or two) then power up your router, wait until it's stable (another minute or two) and then power up your PC.

I gave your process a try but there's still no internet available when the DIR-601 is between my DSL modem and my PC.

I can "log in" to the router from my PC using the http://dlinkrouter address and do things like set a password and make settings but the box itself seems to be of two minds: the Earth icon on the front indicates there is an internet connection available but the internal setting pages in the router say there is no internet connection detected.

So... there is a valid Ethernet connection between my modem and the router and a valid Ethernet connection between the router and my PC but no internet traffic is being passed through the router.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

There is 1.02NA availble on the web site. Lets see if we can get this going first before updating anything.

Is this your modem? If so I think it has a router built in.

What IP address sting do you see under Status/Device Info/Wan section? 192.168.#.# or a ##.##.###.### address?

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.  How? Make sure that each device you have it set up for automatic networking or auto obtain under there networking properties.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.  I don't see specific settings for that in Windows Firewall. This model might not have these additional options. Thats ok. Try turning OFF SPI to test.

You are connecting wired or wireless to the router?

That is the same Speedstream 5100 that I have.  I hadn't thought of a box that attaches one computer and no more as a "router"   

So how do i "Bridge" it?  Is this the same as the "enable Bridge Mode" on pg 78 of that pdf?

I believe so however I would recommend you call the ISP and ask them about it and make sure they can help you bridge it correctly. You might need the PPPoE account information that you'll need to use on the router under Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection Type. Besure to check ALWAYS ON if you see this option.

That's almost identical to the modem I have.  Is it a 5100a (4 lights) or 5100b (5 lights).  If the latter there are three options.  I recommend PPPoE on the modem and pass the public IP to the router.  That way you will have access to the GUI interface for both the router and the modem and avoid double NAT. 

I suspect your problem is the IP of the router is conflicting with the IP of the modem.  That modem has a fixed IP of 192.168.0.1 which is identical to the IP of the router out of the box.  The IP of the router can be changed, that of the modem cannot.  So if you can get into the GUI of the router, change the IP to 192.168.1.1 and you should be good to go after resetting.
