Pulling drive while DNS-321 is on?

Since the drives power down, is it safe to remove them while they're off and no clients are accessing them?  Obviously, it's probably still wisest to power down the D-LInk before removing the drives, but I just wondered if the unit handled SATA hotplug at all.

Please don't confuse 'spindown' with 'powerdown' - they are two different things - there is still power to the drives when they are 'spundown'.

Having said that, the SATA connector was designed for 'hot plugging' and your only risk in pulling a drive with the unit on is loss of data - so yes, you can pull the drive, with minimal risk of data loss, whilst the drives are 'spundown', but since the unit does not support 'hot swap' which is different to 'hot plug', the question becomes - why would you want to, what is there to be gained by taking the risk?

Thanks for the clarification, fordem.  I knew the difference between spindown and powerdown--just didn't realize which one it was that the DNS-32* did.  I also inadvertently "swapped" hot-plug with hot-swap.  Obviously, for hot-swap to be useful, the unit would have to recognize the new disk, format it, or take other action, and keep going.

As to why?  I wanted to pull the drive to get the serial number/model number/part number off of it without powering down.  :)  No biggy.

OK - that leads to another question - did you check the status page?

When I look at the status page mine shows me that I am running

1 Maxtor 6Y080M0 Y266H35C 80GB
2 Maxtor 6Y080M0 Y22T4FEE 80GB

So what I have is the brand, the model the serial number and the capacity - the only thing not available is the firmware.

I did check the status page.  And it showed my model/serial number.  I was looking for something else that was not on that page though. (Part number?)  Don't remember any more.  Oh well.  I got what I was looking for by removing the drive (with the DNS off).
