Blackberry Torch 9800 connection issues
« on: December 30, 2011, 08:37:33 AM »

Hey all, been awhile since I've been on here since all was working great until very recently.  I'm having a problem with a new (refurb) Blackberry Torch 9800 that was a forced insurance replacement for a Blackberry Bold 9700 that had an unrelated issue.

So I can connect this phone to the network (DGL 4500, A2, 1.23fw) as I have with half a dozen other cell phones in the past, along with countless other devices.  But it seems to stop working every time without any obvious disconnection to the network.  I can for instance go to google.com, but cannot complete a search.  Some other websites works inconsistently.

Going through ATT support found that from what they can tell it is connected, I can see IP address it gets (DHCP), and the DNS suffix (Comcast), which look fine.  I was hoping someone else with this router has had this similar problem but a search didn't yield any results here.  I'm not saying its a problem with the router but perhaps some setting for this that I don't know about.  A broad internet search for this phone (~1 year old model) shows others have similar issues with other routers, but of course ATT says to check with ISP and router manufacturer.  But I know this to probably be a better place for ideas/answers, any suggestions appreciated.

Everything works fine on the phone when using ATT network, and I haven't had a chance to try another wifi network and router.  Hopefully it has the same issue at an ATT store using their equipment!

Update, I was messing around with settings and found that it works ok when I use b/g only rather than n/g modes.  When using N, setting it to 20MHz only rather than 20/40 didn't help though.  Any other ideas on what specifically can be changed with N enabled?

What is the Cypher type? Try TPIK only then test with AES only. Test single mode G.
Might be that phone isn't like mixed modes any cypher types.

I would find out what phone supports in regards to modes the cypher.

Yeah that did seem to work, I made it TPIK and AES instead of AES only.  I seem to recall a similar issue with a computer some years back and this same trick did it, but that computer would have been from about 5 years ago, seems strange this is needed on a fairly new phone that supposedly supports wifi-N.  Then again RIM seems to be digging their own grave slowly and this phone didn't get much praise...

Thanks tho!
