Problems syncing files from local drive to DNS-321
« on: March 11, 2009, 12:44:12 PM »

I wanted to see if anyone else had problems syncing to the DNS-321.

I am trying to sync files from my local drive drive to the DNS-321, but every sync tool I use always copies all files, not just modified files.  I have tried "xcopy /d", RichCopy, and SyncToys all with the same result.  Even if I choose modified files only, all files are copied.  If I try syncing the files from one local drive to another local drive I get the desired outcome -- only files that have been modified since the last sync are copied, so I know the software settings are correct.

There is also an issue with the 'Date Created' for files that are copied to the DNS-321.  The dates are typically the same, but the time is off between the original and the DNS-321.  This happens if I do a standard DOS copy, xcopy, or file explorer copy.  Again, copying local disk to local disk works as expected.

I've been using SyncToy with a DNS-323 - but I echo from left to right rather than sync - and have observed no problems with it.

I had the same problem with XCOPY from Windows to an EXT3 file system on a Linksys NSLU2; I didn't research the issue and just assumed it was some incompatibility between the MS XCOPY command and the EXT file system.

I would expect quirks with xcopy which relies on the time & date stamps and file attributes to decide which files need to be copied - any differences between the times of the two systems may cause problems with the time/date comparison and differences in how linux/Windows checks file attributes.

As far as I know SyncToy uses a different methodology - which is capable of tracking file deletions & renames and replicating those changes to the other side, something than xcopy is incapable of doing (files that have been deleted in the source will be left in the destination, and files that have been renamed in the source will exist in the destination under both the old & new names) - I have not really paid attention to how Synctoy handles these changes, but presumably it is done through the "index file" (my name for it) that Synctoy creates in each folder.
