SharePort: Not Ready for Prime Time
« on: March 03, 2009, 07:35:40 AM »

[Judging by the amount of activity here, D-Link needs to do a better job of publicizing these Forums. Particularly since their own technical support is limited to copying text from the FAQs.]

In my experience, SharePort (v1.14) needs more development work before it can be considered a finished product. I tried to attach an external hard drive to the SharePort, for the purpose of running scheduled backups. Sometimes my external drive receives a drive letter, but most times it does not. When it does not, I have to unplug the drive from the SharePort and plug it back in again. Even then, the drive letter mysteriously vanishes during the day.

In addition, data transfer to the SharePort is substantially slower than when I plug my external drive directly into a USB port on my computer.

It's a great concept, but it's not ready for prime time yet.

First let me respond by saying FAQ's generally fix 90% of user issues. If they didn't work for you in a support email or call don't be upset thats standard operating procedure. There's no way for the technician to know it didn't work until they try it.

If you're having trouble with the shareport utility attaching to a specific hard drive make sure you've activated the connection within the utility itself. Open the utility and click the drive and click connect.

"Open the utility and click the drive and click connect. "

You mean, just like it says in the User Manual?

Honestly, why bother replying if you're not going to address my questions?

Bulldog,
Was I supposed to assume that you had done that? Did you list that you'd done that before? No.
Also I'm simply eliminating issues one at a time. If you're not satisfied with my help, you're welcome to insult someone else thats trying to help you.

Who's insulting whom? Why don't you ask me if I plugged the USB cable into the port?

If I hadn't clicked the "Connect" button I would receive a drive icon "never", not "sometimes", as I reported.

If I hadn't clicked the "Connect" button I would have "no" performance, not "slow" performance, as I reported.

Okay, I think we've both made our points.

Your initial reply was dismissive and insulting.
You rebutted as if I owed you an answer, this is a forum. In a forum people ask questions, and other people try to respond.
When there isn't enough information provided in the initial post further questions are posed in order to gain a better perspective on the situation. I posed a question to you and proceeded to respond in a manner I found insulting, as if I had done you a disservice by not respond to your question in a manner you saw befitting your question.

This type of insensitive and and just plain rude behavior will not be tolerated on these forums. We are here to assist you as best possible, if you do not find your answer or feel that we are not assisting you properly you are more then welcome to call D-Links dedicated support phone number at 877-453-5465.

Due to the flame-ish nature and it's apparent deviation from the original topic I'm locking this thread. If you feel that you've been wronged or have a reply that is useful to me and others about your original issue, feel free to PM me or any other forum MOD/Admin and we'll happily unlock it for you.

Have a great day.
