HELP DIR-655 giving me speed of 65mbps....
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:03:30 PM »

I am about to lose it. so, I really hope all of you knowledgeable peeps can help.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, VGN -NW260F, its only a year old. Running Windows 7.
internal card is Atheros A9285
I have a cable internet connection.

The router is only giving me speeds of 65mbps. no matter what I do.
I have:
upgraded firmware to 1.34NA
I have the most updated drivers on the Atheros (which was no easy task to find mind you. WTF?)
the settings on the router are:

mixed 11n and 11g (i have a tivo and a printer using G, plus trying N only did NOTHING to help)
transmission rate= best (automatic)
auto 20/40 mhz
WAP-Person
WAP2 only
AES
3600 key group interval

I have tried channels 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11. Some channels gave no connection at all.

my wired speed is 1.0 Gbps
wireless...65Mbps. WHY???

This is a new situation. I use to get 130 regularly. I gave trying to get anything better than that long ago.
I even have the D-Link N wireless card. of course it is a PCI card and the laptop has no slot for this. My old acer does and when I use it, it gets 300Mbps. But, that computer is old and I upgraded to this Sony and my wireless router SUCKS.

anyone? what am I missing?

oh. yeah. I called tech support. twice. neither of them knew anything. one tried to tell me that the max speed possible on this DIR-655 is 108 Mbps! say WHA?? I changed to channel 9 while ont he phone with her and I got a speed of 108. she seemed to think this was acceptable and told me to monitor it for 24 hour. kind of like, take 2 aspirin and call back in the morning.  ::) But, about 10 minutes after getting off the phone with her, bam! right back to 65. I am using a wired connection now.

How are you determining that your getting 65Mps?
Are you making sure your connected PC is set up for working on the wireless N mode?
Are the drivers for that Wireless up to date?
What other WiFi routers are in your area?
If your using mixed mode g and n, your device might be only connecting at the g mode level.
Have you tried single mode N to test?

Disable Wish.
Wi-Fi Protected Setup - Un-check it to Disable It.

thanks for your replies!

ok, you guys are saying two opposite things.

FurryNutz - your questions:

How are you determining that your getting 65Mps?

both from windows and from the D-Link set up page- 192.168.0.1, under status, wireless.

Are you making sure your connected PC is set up for working on the wireless N mode?

it is. its a laptop, sony vaio, windows 7 with an atheros A9285, set up to handle N.

Are the drivers for that Wireless up to date?

yes. I JUST updated them while trying to figure out why this is happening. As I said, it was NOT easy to find the Atheros drivers. good god.

What other WiFi routers are in your area?

I am not sure I understand. i live in an apartment building with 4 units and in a major met city. my wireless brings up 30 options that are not me, but are around me.

If your using mixed mode g and n, your device might be only connecting at the g mode level.
Have you tried single mode N to test?

I have tried to just use N only mode. it did not help. I got up to 108, but within an hour it dropped back down to 65, and I was unable to use my printer.

ok, so i tried what both of you said, but nothing changed. at least not right away. should I give it time to connect to a higher speed? tech support seemed to tell me i need to monitor for 24 hours. somehow i did not believe them.

could it be my firewall? i have avast! i upgraded adobe last week and it installed mcafee. grrrr....i have since uninstalled it. but, could it have changed some settings that need to be changed back?

it just really seems like something is blocking speed...i am soooooooo annoyed.

being an apartment complex with other WiFi routers or radios around could have an impact on your signal and speed.

I would download and install and run the following:
http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

This will help you see what other WiFi radios are in the area and might be able to help you pick a channel to set manually on your router. I would start with single mode G at 2.4Ghz and try changing channels.

I would so try and set the power output of the WiFi as well found under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. Lessoning the output to a lower setting might help the signal in your area.

Are there any cordless phones on your apt? There could be others around you as well.

there is a cordless phone. there has always been a cordless phone. there have also been other people with other wireless connections around me. and i still got 150 before. this does not seem a solution, no offense.

i did not buy this thing so that i would have to tip toe around my delicate genius wireless router because it cannot perform. i have NEVER gotten 230 or 270. i gave up complaining about that. but really, i am not getting what i paid for, and now not at all.

i just don't understand... ???

You are probably just running into too much interference with all those networks in your area.

I recommend trying out that application that I mentioned to see whats around your apartment area to see what is out there.

Also test out the single G mode at 2.4Ghz then try single mode N and see what you get.

Hello

This seems to be a Windows 7 bug although I have yet to find anyone else that has come to the same conclusion.

See my post: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/206467-windows-7-seems-limit-wifi-65mbps-per-channel-anyone-noticed.html

People all over the net are asking why they only get 130 mbps or 65 mbps when running Windows 7 and there are a lot of replies blaming interference and such but not taking into consideration that people have all noted the 65 (not 64 or 66 but always 65 limit and all on Windows 7). The 130 seems to come in when people connect configured for 300 (dual channel therefore 2 x 65) and always get 130.

I suspect that Windows 7 might actually be reporting the connection speed incorrectly as I have not noticed any drop in actual performance.

Possible...are the drivers up to date for 7?

This is a fairly older post so things might have change since then.

Hi seast91,

Have you read and followed this sticky: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1236.0 ?

Until I followed this sticky and changed the Wireless not to scan, but to change the Wireless Channel to 11, my Wireless Speed was the same as yours.

Is your Windows 7 32-Bit or 64-Bit operating system?
