From browsing around it seems this is the place for DIR-815 issues, but if it is not please move it to the correct section.

I recently purchased the DIR-815 to upgrade an older non-N router. Devices normally connected are:
1 HDTV on 5GHz band (n)
3-4 assorted laptops on 2.4GHz band (g)
1 Blu-Ray player wired via CAT5

SSID is different between the bands, and both use WPA security.
The router uplinks to a cable modem without any internal router function.

The router regularly drops connection to the laptops. The network can usually (but not always) be seen by the PC but will not accept connection.  This happens most frequently when restarting the PC but has happened when left running and connected.  Same behavior has been seen on the TV.  Power cycling the router usually resolves the issue.  There are multiple other wireless routers in range (neighbors), and I have checked with InSSIDer and found one other router using the same channel range but with a substantially lower signal (others are more crowded).  I have tried varying the location of the router by a few feet, and adjusted the antenna angles with no changes.  I have also monkeyed with the router settings to no avail, then reset it and  reinstated security but the drop outs continue.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try next, or what other information may make the picture clearer?  Thanks in advance.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto AES only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. Need to see if you have any near by WiFi routers.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Using Mixed g/b on the 2.4GHz (I have no option for only g) and only n on the 5GHz

There were, but they were powered down and the base unplugged when I started to have the problems, and they remain off.

The checkbox for Short Guard Interval is selected and greyed out (cannot deselect) on the 2.4GHz band, but has been deselected on the 5GHz band.  I see no option for Extra Wireless Protection.

The wired device has no problems, it is only the wireless connections that are giving me fits.

You need to get away from the one that your sharing. Need to find an open channel and you can manually try to set up one for. This is probably having an impact on your wireless issues here. Anyone using 4 or 8?

I had tried manually selecting channel 3 before with no joy so I went back to Auto.  I have now deselected Auto and forced it to channel 4.  Will see if that cures it and report back either way.

One thing you can try to make sure the router is working well, if you have family or friends that have internet, take the router to there place, a different area and see if the router behaves in the same way. I know it's kind of extreme however in conditions like this, trying to troubleshoot wifi congestion is hard.
