web server hosting on DNS-323
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:44:27 PM »

It is my understanding that I can host a web server on my DNS-323, using DDNS feature of this device.
I already setup a domain name using dyndns, but that's all I can do so far.

I did go into setup, I did enable this feature.
Also I did enable it on my DIR-655 router, but nothing.

After I build my webspace, than what? I assume I have put this on a directory on a disk inside DNS-323.
Than what? How do I acces it through the internet?

I am able to ping my link from inside my network, but that's all I can do.

So, how do I exactly set up my web server using DNS-323 and DIR-655 ?

Thank you

You cannot host a webserver on the DNS-323 with hacking it - the DDNS feature is intended to let you use a Dynamic DNS system to locate the ftp server.

Thank you

I am more confused now.
On the DNS-323 config screen (TOOLS tab, DDNS on the menu on the left) I read the following:

"The Dynamic DNS feature allows you to host a server (Web, FTP, Game Server, etc...) using a domain name that you have purchased (www.whateveryournameis.com) with your dynamically assigned IP address"

In plain English, DLINK tells me that I am able to host a Web server on my DNS-323.

You're telling me I cannot?
That kind of contradicts the statement above from Dlink

The Dynamic DNS feature "D-Link's Free DDNS service at www.DLinkDDNS.com"
allows you to host a server (Web, FTP, Game Server, etc...)

The DNS-323 does not; however, have the capability (without hacking) to run
a web server (besides the built in web GUI).

"The Dynamic DNS feature allows you to host a server (Web, FTP, Game Server, etc...) using a domain name that you have purchased (www.whateveryournameis.com) with your dynamically assigned IP address"

Exactly like it says - the dynamic DNS feature allows you to host a server ... using a domain name ... with your dynamically assigned ip address - it does not say on the DNS-323 and the only one of those servers mentioned that you can host on an unhacked DNS-323 is an ftp server.

Briefly - hosting  a server would normally require a domain name to be registered and a static public ip address to point that domain name to - plus of course the hardware, software, etc, to host the server.  Dynamic DNS allows you to register the domain name and have it point to a dynamically assigned public ip address.

Without this feature, hosting a server without a static public ip address becomes challenging, you need to keep track of when the public ip address changes and what it changes to, and pass the information onto all of your potential visitors.

The DNS-323 has a dynamic DNS client that can update the dynamic DNS server so that the domain name points to the correct ip address, and assuming that you have correctly configured your router and other hardware to host the server, you can host all of the above mentioned servers, but not on the DNS-323.

The only one of the above mentioned servers that runs on an "out of the box" DNS-323 is the ftp server.

Quote from:  -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(hobbyist)
Hacker (hobbyist)
In home computing, a hacker is a person who heavily modifies the software or hardware of their computer system. It includes building, rebuilding, modifying and creating software (software cracking, demo scene) and electronic hardware (hardware hacking, modding) either to make it better, faster, give added features or to make it do something it was never intended to do. Hobby hacking originated around the MITS Altair.
