File streaming to my PS3
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:01:06 PM »

Hi all,
I am having file streaming problems with my PS3.  Specifically the playback is quite choppy and I get video/audio desyncs.  when I stream from my computers the files run smoothly.  I also get DLNA errors and network errors(a variety not always the same ones).

I and using a DNS-323 Rev B with the 1.06 Firmware,  A linksys WRT610N router and a PS3 (via wireless) with the latest (2.60 I believe) firmware.  any suggestions would be appreciated.

if you need more info about my network setup please ask and I will provide it.

Thanks in advance,
Nathan

hey Nathan,

You network setup would be good.  Is your computer doing anything when you are trying to play the file on the PS3?  try shutting down all your computers and just have the PS3 and nas working, see if that makes a difference.

From what you described i am running the same devices, ps3(wireless), laptop(wireless) and have a Linksys WRVS4400N and i have no problems.  My network is gigabit router and switch with cat5e cables and wireless N if supported by the device. I am running the same f/w and rev B as well so there is not reasons for it to be choppy at all.

I have a WRT330n (DD-WRT v24sp1), DNS-323 and PS3 wired together on Gigabit links.  I have zero problems streaming to the PS3; not one error ever.

I had trouble with my PS3 using wireless to stream anything that was "DVD" sized or better; for example 720x480 @ 24p was not watchable ... and I'm using nothing but D-Link hardware: DNS-323 & DIR-655 Wireless router.  My router is 3' from the PS3.

Pretty much the same problems you had, skipping, choppiness, DLNA errors...

Given the proximity of my router to the PS3, I opted for a Wired connection and never had a problem since.  Even Blu-Ray/HD videos play without skipping.

I had a lot of issues with not seeing files, dnla errors etc and could not see any reason for the problem. One day, I decided to check for firmware updates and realised that my Linksys router had an update that dealt with uPnP problems and once I did that, everything ran without a problem. I suggest you try upgrading every device in the collection to the latest firmware and see if that can help you as it did for me.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my original post.

After posting I modified the QOS provisions on my router and found that that reduced (but did not eliminate) the problems I experienced.  As for using a wired connection it would be a monumental pain in my deriere (but not impossible so I may bite the bullet and do it) due to the physical seperation of the 2 devices.  The thing that bothers me though is that my PS3 has less trouble streaming from my computers.  As for Firmware.. it's up to date.

If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate the assistance,

Nathan
