Static Router - Perhaps? Anyone?
« on: February 09, 2012, 10:49:26 PM »

Hello - May I have some advice from you please?

At home, I have a kind of "hub-spoke" kind of routers configuration with every one of them are not broadcasting their SSID.

The very main head router (DIR685) is the one connected to Fiber-Modem broadband to Internet and this is the one that gets the only WAN IP Address from ISP.
The rest of 3 other-routers are just a child-spoke routers connected from each of the DIR685 LAN Port.
<ISP Internet> --- <Fiber Modem> --- <Main Router DIR685> --- <Other 3 Spokes Routers DIR655>

The 3 Spoke Routers are basically for 3 main different purposes:
1. Storage related Router.
2. Family Connected Router.
3. Multimedia Streaming Router.

So my problem is simply that devices that are connected on Family Connected router is not able to access Storages that are attached to Storage-Router. :)

Similar to devices from Multimedia Streaming Router are not able to access files in Storages that are attached to Storage-Router :)

So - I have read some topics: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=6422.0 - is one of them.
That I may need to:
1. Disable the spoke-routers' Firewall in its WAN to LAN connection --- NO problem I would do.
2. Put static routing on each router to find its destination router (Storage-Router).

So now - How would I be able to put static-route in these two models routers? While the Port mention is only WAN[IP Address] and WAN Physical - and there is no LAN?

Any help or advice would be pretty much appreciated.

Thanks.

BR - Arc.

I recommend turning those child routers into APs. Disable all features on those routers accept for wireless if they support them on all.

One thing you might want to consider instead of using child routers for connections, is to get a external Gb network switch to connect up multiple devices. this will allow for better communications between devices and eliminates host router management. Yes you'll still get internet from the host router, just when you need to share and connect between devices, the router won't be involved. I have a 24pt switch connected to my host router and everything connected to the switch. You can still use the child routers as APs too.
