655 question re: QOS setup
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:32:54 AM »

Hi all....first time caller long time listener  :D

I have a dir-655 using firmware 1.35NA.  Had it for about 3yrs now.  Figured I wuld finally try and use the QOS feature for XBL gaming.  My question is related to priority.  The sticky shows a priority range of 1-8 but my QOS setup lists priority 1-255.  What priority should I use for the 360?  1.....like the sticky?  Thanks.

Some routers have 1-8 and some have 1-255. Use 1 for XBL however. You can use other priority numbers for other devices if you like. I added a couple of PCs and set them at 200 so they still get data however don't interfere with XBL and gaming.

Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL.

That probably works as well however having more than one game console online at the same time can impact the QoS function so it's best to help it by configuring it some. It works well.

I set the 360 up using 1 as the priority.  I have 2 desktops, a net book, kindle fire, and a laptop + wireless printer......with a wife and 4 kids on the net constantly.   Did not set any prioritiy/QOS rules for the other devices.  Connection and lag are much improved, used to drop to yellow bar or red bar in MW3 when the kids were DLing stuff and watching videos but 4 bar now almost all the time and I'm pulling host about 20-30% of the time.  I did add all XBL ports to the QOS, not just the 2 in the sticky......and set up port forwarding for the XBL ports.  No complaints from the rest of the house either so far.......so they must not be getting slowed down very much.  Thanks for the help.

Just FYI, the only ports needed for XBL are the 2 in the sticky. The other ports aren't used by the games while playing. Also be aware that if you use Port Forward for your one xbox, should you add another or more game consoles they will error out on connecting to XBL when going online all at the same time. If you set up your reservations correctly, you can just add the new consoles sequentially and then just change the Local IP Ranger From and to Fields to include the new IP addresses in WoS and disable any port forwarding as it will not be needed. I have 3 on mine. Works well.

Remember to save off your current configuration to file so in case you have to factory reset the router, you can just reload the config from file and you'll be up and running.

Enjoy.
