Help! Partition is gone!
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:49:51 AM »

Recently bought a DNS-320 with 1Tb HDD, made all setups and put some data on it. I was able to access folder remotely, and view files via UPnP server. Now i decided to put DNS to another place in my appartment, pressed a Shutdown button for 3 seconds so it turned off. I plugged it back into network/power after a day and now i cannot access my data.
From System Status > System Info > Volume Information it's "None Hard Drives.".
When i enter disk management it tells me that i need to format drive again. SMART shows no problems.

1. What should i do?
2. What i did wrong?
3. Can i trust this NAS to keep data? I can live without a couple of movies i've put on it now, but what if i'll put some sensitive data on it?

Hi,
On the off chance, that somehow the drives were dislodged, power it down, open it up and try reseating the drives in their same positions.  Good luck

Hi, tried that one but no luck - still suggests me to reformat them and PC utility displays HDD as "NEW". Sad, really. Any other solution then?

UPD: And just to clarify - it's only 1 HDD in "Standard"

When you say PC utility displays 'new', did you put the drive in a SATA caddy, either USB or direct connection to your PC and what operating system do you have on the PC.

If your PC operating system is windows then you need an IFS driver for the PC to see the drive format (linux - ext3 or ext4).

Since you have only a single drive you stand a very good chance of recovering your data on that drive, unless it has somehow been wiped.

For information about recovery look in the sticky section above this.  There you will find information about what is required, especially when using a windows PC.

But really, is that happens often? Thanks god i didn't had everything on that hard drive, but if it wipes my data after 3 days of use? Do that happen often with these?

My NAS suffered some power failures (4 or 5), due to a malfunctioning UPS (the battery was depleted). After powering it on, all data was intact.

Next time shut it down via its web interface; it's a lot safer. Protecting it with an UPS wouldn't be a bad idea, since it's powered on all the time.

As far as I know what you seen - just remember your data may still be intact - is an exception.

We have two 320s since they became available in Europe as well as three 323s for an even longer period and have never seen what you are seeing - I should add our clients, where we have installed 320s, haven't seen it either or we would have heard all about it.

One other thing I forgot to ask, have you pushed the reset button - with a straightened paper clip - at the back of the unit when it is powered on with the drive in it?

If you had put sensitive data, always make sure you have to copies, one on the NAS and the other somewhere else.

I had power issues in the past but my 320 did recover every time, even got the email alert!

one question, you mentioned you pushed the power button for 3 seconds. Did you push it until it went off? Or did you push it and release, after a couple of seconds LEDs blink and it goes off?

Wondering if you did a hard reset or an actual shutdown.
