Router drops connection about once a week
« on: September 08, 2011, 09:33:36 AM »

Im not sure what is happening all the sudden, but my router has started to drop its connection every week or so at random times. (its not the IP reset). My indication is i lose internet connection. But when it does this, i cannot even log into the Router. Its like it drops off the network completely.

im still running FW 1.10, but im curious if this could be an outside attack as well. Its hard to get this info because i have to reset the router (ie unplug it) and that clears the log.. It also seems to reset the date/time as well, which is hella annoying.

Any ideas?

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Does the router recover on its own ?  Or do you have to reboot it manually ?

I know from time to time I see my router seemingly lose signal but then my pc recovers....certainly an annoyance, but not enough to make me go buy a new router....

It doesnt recover. Its not linked to my PC as i have multiple with different OS's and they all lost connection to the internet. But they still think they are connected to the router itself, despite my not being able to log into the router.

What HW version is your router? How do i find this out, and why does it matter?
What FW version is currently loaded? 1.21 now, was at factory (1.10)

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  irrelevant
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?  Stand Alone
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?  irrelevant
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems. It doesnt

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? All set to 0's, which as been working for 3 years.
Turn off QoS options. Its been on the last 3 years,  irrelevant
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual. N/A
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Already on for 3 years
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Already set that way
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. Already set that way
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.  (Now i recall I changed this for TCP when i moved to this location, which is when i started having this issue. Ill come back to this later)

What wireless modes are you using?  irrelevant
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?  irrelevant
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.  irrelevant
What wireless devices do you have connected?  irrelevant
Any cordless house phones?  irrelevant
Any other WiFi routers in the area?  irrelevant, but yes

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. Already tried
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.   irrelevant

Many things here are irrelevant, tho i know this is just a copied questionnaire and did point out a possible cause that will require testing as it made me aware of a change i did do before the problem occurred. However everything else had been working without issue for the past 3 years.  I have updated the firmware and will first check to see if the issue comes back with that (using the same settings as before the update) if so i will switch the setting i changed, back to how it was before.

For the record, the change i made was

From: TCP Endpoint Filtering: Address Restricted
To:    TCP Endpoint Filtering: Port And Address Restricted

because im security paranoid.

Wow, that's the same problem I am facing with my DIR-615, HW:B2, FW:2.25 but now there are days when it dies 3-4 times in an evening for all computers on the network.  When I try to browse to 192.168.0.1 I cannot connect to the router.  A power cycle on the router fixes it.

As to FurryNutz standard questions, I am working with:
DSL
Standard modem, model Siemens Speedstream 4200,
DNS Addresses: Primary and Secondary both 0.0.0.0
Enable QoS Engine is deselected
Do not have Advanced DNS Services
Enable DNS Relay is selected
All devices have DHCP Reservations
Devices are set to auto-obtain
Firewall filtering is endpoint independent for TCP and UDP
Mode: mixed B, G, N
Other Modes: tried just G, tried just N
WPA-Personal, WPA2 Only TPIK and AES (there is not a WPA2/Auto option)

Wireless devices are several laptops, an apple tablet, a blackberry, an iPhone
The problem has occurred when there are no other networks visible and also when other networks are visible.
We have no cordless phones
Anti-virus and firewall have been disabled but in any case the problem happens on all devices, not just on mine
The point about turning off all devices while testing seems inappropriate.  The failure happens occasionally and randomly.  I cannot force a replication of it so there is no testing being done per se.
I do have a hardwired connection to my computer.
