Router failing to connect
« on: January 24, 2012, 03:49:15 PM »

I purchased the D Link 615 router initially so that I could simply use it with my Net Talk telephone which required the use of a router to simply plug into.  Since then I have acquired and use a Kindle and an Acer tablet which both use Wi-Fi.  My connection to the wireless service is sporadic.   I have been able to connect for two or three days in a row, but inevitably I will receive a message that the connection cannot be established.    On my initial post for my problem it was suggested that I do as follows:

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I have tried to do all the above, but in many cases the terms used were different and the menu choices were sometimes not available.  I did adhere to any of the above advice I could like choosing “WPA-Personal.” However, my problem persists and I do not know what to do. Is the 615 an inferior router?  It is about 2 years old.  According to Cnnet the Linksys E 1200 is the best.

I have AT&T DSL with their Motorolla modem.

I have taken the Acer tablet to stores and restaurants that have signals and it works fine every time, so the fault must be with the router.  Thank you in advance for any help.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Did I answer enough questions to have you help me?  It is just a single Motorolla stand alson modem.  My connection is fine so I don't think it is a modem issue.  What is the quality of the 615?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Modem make and model # do you have?
What IP address do you see under Status/Device Info/Wan section on the router? 192.168.0.# or a ##.##.###.###?
