Optimal performance & Settings Help!
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:13:59 AM »

Hi All

New to the forum but have owned a DNS 320 for about 1 year.

I'm running my 320 over Comtrend 9020 powerline adapters.  These are 200mbps adapters which i have set up as follows:
1 - Dlink DNS 320
2 - WDTV
3 - Dlink GB switch, which plugs into the GB port in my router (My media PC also plugs into the GB switch).

I've got a number of issues, which all relate to speed.  Main one is my data transfer rates.  When i'm trying to copy data up to my NAS i'm getting about 2mbps (max).

Second issue is that when i'm using my WDTV, and trying to stream off one of the online services (Youtube for example) i'm getting reasonable quality streaming, and my powerline adapters speed indicators are all green (meaning HD quality +50mbps).  As soon as i switch to Video, Network Shares, and point the WDTV at the 320, as it starts to buffer to powerline indicators go red.  Streaming across my network only seems to be an issue when using the 320.

Finally, I've tried several times (and given up) at the UPnP options, to enable media sharing on the 320.  However every time i start it scanning the volumes it dies early on in the process.  I've followed this up with Dlink support, but they were useless.

Any advice on any of the above issues would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried swapping the ethernet cable going to your DNS 320?

Anything being transmitted over power line adapters is subject to noise and lost packets - all of which slows down transfer speed.

You should try connecting your units without the power line adapters - you can run up to 100 m of ethernet cable, and see what the results are then.

I'll check all network cabling in my setup.

One more thing though.  When i originally populated my 320 i copied data over from a PC, via a GB switch (no homeplugs or adapters involved), and i was still only peaking at about 12mbps.

Which firmware are you using? Some guys reported bad performance after upgrading to 2.02, check http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42695.msg152201#msg152201

Okay checked all of my cabling.

My gigabit switch is reporting 100mbps for the 320 connection.  I've swapped out all the cabling to CAT 5E or better, and i still can't get gigabit over my powerline adapters, so i'll put that down to my wiring.

I still don't understand why even now as i'm copying a file over it's going at just under 3mbps.

To be honest Bishop, it's always been dreadful transfer rates, regardless of which firmware i've been on.

When i first go the unit  transferred data across directly without dapter, via a gigabit switch, an d couldn't get any faster than 14mbps.

I've had great results with my ZyXEL PLA4205KIT Powerline Ethernet Adapter, It's rated for 500mbps. I haven't measured speeds yet but I've streamed 1080p videos to my XBOX360 with no problems. It could be an issue with the Electrical Wiring in your home. Make sure those adapters are NOT plugged into any surge protectors, and make sure any other devices you use are plugged INTO surge protectors. Also, fluorescent lighting can causing EMI problems, you can buy filters for those.

No surge protectors in the mix and no flurescent lighting in the house, just crappy house wiring i guess.

One more thing.  Media Shares or Network Shares - which is better from a performance point of view?

Hi,
I have tried various powerline adapters for networking, although not the latest 500Mb ones.  The problem I had was with interference and inconsistent results.  I finally discovered something called MOCA devices which transmit the data through the cable TV lines at a higher frequency than is used by most cable companies.  There are some limitations.  MOCA is not compatible with Satellite TV and cable TV amplifiers will block the signal also.  On occasion, these might cause some interference with some channels from the cable co. and possibly the cable modem if that is how you get the internet.  These issues can be resolved usually with splitters and the use of a "MOCA" FILTER.  FIOS uses a form of MOCA.  There are at least 2 brands of MOCA adapters and filters available at the online auction place.  You need at least 2 adapters unless you are on FIOS and you can add a switch to give you multiple ethernet outlets, say near your TV, computer, etc.   I never see these mentioned but they are the most stable and trouble free devices I have found.  Do some google searches for more information.

Unfortunately in the UK we don't really have much cable TV.

So....  UPnP Media Sharing or Network Shares?

My friend suggests using network shares to improve the speed.  However yesterday my WDTV Live could see the DNS-320 over Network Shares, but just wouldn't connect.

Tried UPnP Media Shares and it connected straight away.  The main issue i have against using Media Shares is that it seems to give random order (not alphabetic) back on my WDTV Live.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Hi,
The UPNP server on the 320 with firmware 2.0 and below has the problem and gives non-alphanumeric folders and files.  The 2.02 firmware fixes that problem, but there is no downgrading, and a few folks have trouble with other features.  Do your homework before you upgrade, but this will fix the UPNP server.
I have all of the WD TV Live versions but I don't have any problem connecting with either the network shares or the media server.  Do you have the latest firmware on the WD TV?  NAS and WD both using the same network name?  That's all my guesses for now.  Good luck

Correction regarding the WD TV LIVE, the newest version works fine, but the older Live and Live Plus, give me a "NO MEDIA FOUND", when trying to use the network shares.  Will see if I can figure that out now.

Back again, try to enable the AJAXPLORER function in the applications for the 320, save settings, reboot 320 and WD TV LIVE and see if it is now available in your network shares on the WD TV.

Just uses the nas with a macbook pro to copy a large file, 100GB+. Got 20MBs was very depressing. Whats the point of gigabit Ethernet on the 320 if you cant get full use form it

Hello,

I have 2 DNS-320 (Raid-1 each one) and 2 WDTV LIVE.  I have installed the v.2.02 firmware over gigabit LAN (Cat 6 cable, 2 gigabit switch netgear, 10/100 router) and yesterday transfer 1 TB of files (134) by  ftp at 18-25 Mb/s (using Filezilla).  I don't use the UPNP of DNS (the films stopped, freeze, etc, and now is disable).  I use twonky server without any problems (playing bdrip, bdremux and full bluray).  The unique problem is the WDTV, is a bit obsolete for high frames rates films (need more power image processor i supposed).

I never transfer files more than 35 Mb/s (version firmware 2.00) by ftp.

Good luck.
