Hard disk failure?
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:01:03 AM »

I have a Seagate ST32000542AS (2TB) hard disk and it was put in the left bay of DNS320, only 1 hard disk in NAS and Raid type is Standard. In Disk Management, I did Scan Disk and it was failed at about 66%. But when I did the S.M.A.R.T test, both Quick Test and Extended test got passed. So I am wondering, my disk is defected, or not? Should i immediately purchase another 2TB hard disk to make a RAID 1, or backup everything for this Seagate 2TB?

Hi,
If you have the space I would recommend you backup immediately.  If you do buy another hard drive, you might want to consider using 2 standard drives and using the local backup feature.  If you have a minute, you might want to check out this link provided by Javalawyer, http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42033.0
In any case, good luck.

To further verify if there's indeed problem with the HDD, I would recommend pulling out the drive and connect to a desktop PC. Use software tool like HDTune and perform a Error Scan. Depending on size of HD, it will take a long time to complete so just let if run overnight.
