Itunes server not working anymore!
« on: December 20, 2008, 04:38:43 PM »

Hi,

new user. And overall very satisfied with the dns-321. Easy, quick and working well.

Well, except for the itunes server. I have the new firmware. The itunes server was working, but not anymore.
Since i put all of my music on it, it is down (it seems that past a certain amount of data it can not deal with it).
The dns restart look for music, but still doesn't work..

Same symptoms as this thread (for dns323):
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=2720.msg14352#msg14352

Only solution: reset the dns 321 in order to get itunes server on the web GUI again, but no matter what it still does not show up on itunes anymore, and will disappear after i went into it.

Other forums states that the md-daap (?) used is "broken" - but i do not want to telnet into my dns - or that the server use by the dns ccan not recognize well certain ID3 characters.

Do you have a fix ?

I purchased my dns for backup and for the itunes server.

Thanks

Sebastien

bump.

I reinstalled the firmware (latest), re-input all of my settings manually, than I erased all of my music and put it back again. Took me more than the week end.
The dns-321 was working hard, and it was showing up on itunes. I monitored it closely and it went ok.

Well, until I had to reboot my desktop (dns was still at work indexing), and when I started itunes again, the server did not showed up anynore (but the dns was still working on the drive).

I leaft it. It finishes (i guess, as there was no more activity). But still no luck.
Now, I have the same issues all over again from my first entry.

Worse then before, as the dns can be accessed through the mounted drive, but not after a bit from the search utility.

Any fix ?
Any idea how much the dns can handle as far as data ?

Are you just unable to see the DNS-321 iTunes server in the iTunes program on you PC? Are you having any issues on the unit if you want to refresh or change folders?

What anti-virus or personal firewall software are you running on your PC?

Well, I can see the itunes server on a mac and on a pc (when using itunes) when I load songs into the folder. The server works is way up to update the files.

I let it work his time, but it disappear (and the bug where the itunes config page disappear happen).
It seems that it is due to the ammount of data loaded for the itunes server.

It seems that the dns itunes server (the version from the 1.01 firware) can not handle more than 130 gb of data (this is when the itunes can not see anymore the server from within itunes.

I for now, use a software on mac and pc, to allow me to create a "second" library. I just basically switch library (between the one on my pc and the one on the dns).
Not the best solution.

I guess I will wait for a new firmware and hopefully there will be an itunes server update within this firmware ?

wow, it sounds like the 321 and 323 share this same flaw!
I bet they use common open source software.

solved!!! ;-)
i upload this file into \Volume_1  (file name is fun_plug) , changed file permission via ftp to 777 and rebooted device.
After reboot itunes setting was saved correctly and server start to refresh library.
Yeah! ;-)

rm -f /mnt/HD_a2/.systemfile/.mt-daapd/.songs.gdb

What!
No way!

Can you explain in a little more detail ? (I am a noob when it coems to 777 and stuff).

I have deactivated the itunes server for now, but if this does the trick I will be really glad!
My box is not hacked and is just like dlink shipped it (minus the new firmware).

Also, I have 200 gb of music (from many years of ripping my collection and adding my fiancee's one). And I still believe that this amount of data cause teh server/dlink to crash on this!

Are you sharing the Root folder in the Itunes server?  Have you tried just selecting the folder containing only your music?

Another questions does it work properly if you have less media in the music folder? Try like 20 GB and see if it works then add more. This is just for testing If this is an issue it will be addressed in future firmware releases I currently do not have 200GB of music at this time. If you don't mind trying this I will check this out as well I just would like to verify with you.

I actually did exactly that :)

I am not sharing the root as i have other stuff in the same hdd and it will add too much media!

Just specifying the folder where the music is (volume 1/music)

Yep , the itunes server actually dioes work with less media. I add step by step and it is fine. But it seems that there is a tipping point where there is too much for teh itunes server to handle it all (i believe it is at 150or so gb, where it stops working ; it crashes ...)

I have read somewhere that the new (beta) version of firefly (that replace the daap - don't remember the name but the one use currently by the dns - correct this issue). It seems a lot of users got the itunes server crash with too much media (ie the half bottom portion of the itunes server page under teh config does not appear and the server needs to be rebooted to config other page, while being careful not to visit the itunes server page!)

In another matter (well if the fw will be updated), it seems impossible to create an anonymous login (it does when the server runs, but if I shut it down and start it, anonymous users can no longer be possible :)

I'm having a similar but different problem.   ::)
I can see the 321 in the iTunes side bar under devices and I can get it to open and all my tunes/tv shows etc are there (only using 84.5GB of 640-set up as Raid1-have been a bit reluctant to rip my CD library as yet if it will need to be redone since it's going to take over 500GB), but it does not mount on the desktop, nor does it show up in the Network preference pane. And since I can't see it on the desktop or the network I can not direct iTunes to look for the files there. It was working fine and things got transfered to the system drive the last time, but it's now pulling data from my main Raid setup (Raid1 with 2 WD 530GB SATA drives)
The set up has been the same for sometime now, it was three days ago that this started happening.
When I run IP Scanner the 321 shows up in the list, then it doesn't. I've reset everything except going back to 1.0 firmware. And even when it does show up in IP Scanner it does not mount to the desktop.
Running Mac OS 10.5.6 on an Intel Core 2 Duo

loading the fun_plug (.5) is great.  you can turn the itunes server off and run a firefly server instead.  it took about 10min to get it running.  also, using the firefly server works with Roku.
