Rev A - Serious Performance Problems/Reboots
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:21:15 PM »

Well - I continue to have significant performance and random reboots with DIR-825 router (hardware: Rev A1; Firmware: 1.13NA).  My ISP has checked the lines to my cable modem.  If I connect any of my laptops or PCs directly to the cable modem and work off the direct connect, all works fine with no problems for many days and even mutliple weeks.  So, the router seems to be the bottleneck/issue.

I've tried multiple settings changes as listed in the forum here.  My setup is fairly simple and detailed below.  If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Setup -> Internet:
-- Dynamic IP (DHCP)
-- I have disabled "Enable Advanced DNS Service"
-- "Use Unicasting" is enabled
-- I have primary and secondary DNS servers set
-- MTU is: 1500

Setup -> Wireless Settings:
-- 2.4 GHz Band is enabled "Always"
-- 802.11 Mode is set to "Mixed 802.11g and 802.11b"
-- "Enable Auto Channel Scan" is enabled
-- Transmission Rate is set to "Best (automatic)"
-- Visibility Status is set to "Invisible"
-- Security Mode is set to "WPA-Personal"
-- WPA Mode is set to: "WPA2 Only"
-- Cipher Type is set to "TKIP and AES"
-- Group Key Update Interval is set to: 3600

-- 5 GHz Band is disabled

Setup -> Network Settings
-- I have disabled "Enable DNS Relay"
-- I have enabled "Enable DHCP Server"
-- DHCP Lease Time is set to: 1440
-- Enabled "Always broadcast"
-- I have reserved IP addresses for all devices within the "DHCP Reservations List"

Advanced:
-- No virtual server definitions
-- QOS Engine has only "Enable Traffic Shaping" and "Automatic Uplink Speed" enabled.  The "Connection Type" field is set to: "Cable or Other Broadband Network".
-- I have disabled "Enable QoS Engine" field
-- Under "Firewall Settings", I have:
------ Disabled the option for "Enable SPI"
------ UDP Endpoint Filtering is set to: Endpoint Independent
------ TCP Endpoint Filtering is set to: Endpoint Independent
------ Disabled the option for "Enable anti-spoof checking"
------ Disabled the option for "Enable DMZ"
------ The following are enabled: PPTP, IPSec (VPN), RTSP, and SIP

-- Under "Advanced Network", I have:
----- Enabled the option for "Enable UPnP"
----- Disabled the "Enable WAN Ping Respond" option
----- Set the "WAN Port Speed" field to: 10Mbps
----- Disabled the option for "Enable Multicast Streams"

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
>>> Cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
>>> Motorola SB5100 (stand-alone; not built into router)
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
>>> Motorola SB5100

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
>>> I only have 2.4 GHz running (in hopes of not overloading the router with both 2.4 and 5 Ghz running).
>>> The 2.4 GHz is running with mixed g and b.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
>> I'm using WPA-Personal with WPA2 Only and TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
>> 2 laptops, 2 iPhones, DVR, BlueRay DVD player, and TV
Any cordless house phones?
>> No
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
>> Yes - There are 6.  They are using other channels though.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
>> I do not have these settings available on DIR-825 Rev A

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
>> Already done during testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
>> Already done during testing.  One wired PC works across cable modem router directly for weeks with no problems.  However when going through router, the router reboots itself after 8-12 hours of use.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.
>>> Yes - it's CAT6 cable.  Granted, it is 4 feet long due to distance from router/pc (sitting on same desk) to where the cable modem and cable outlet are located.

Any log entries on the router or the modem when the router encounters this reboot?
I would do a factory reset of the router and test again.
I would test this router at a different place like a friend or families place and see of the problem tracks.
I would try a reload of FW using the FW update sticky process in this forum.

Thanks for your further suggestions.

Any log entries on the router or the modem when the router encounters this reboot?
>> Unfortunately, the logs look like they are overwritten when the router reboots.

I would do a factory reset of the router and test again.
>> Yes - I've done this multiple times.  After the factory reset, I turn off all the things listed in my original post in hopes of disabling enough to have it handle the load.

I would test this router at a different place like a friend or families place and see of the problem tracks.
>> Yes - I tried this as well at my parent's house.  They have a different ISP and no other wireless routers around either.  However, the same problem occurred there.

I would try a reload of FW using the FW update sticky process in this forum.
>> Yes - I've reloaded the firmware using these steps.  However, I've been performing my router setup (ex.: my specific ssid, disabling settings, etc.) by hand instead of re-loading from a saved configuration in hopes that perhaps something is wrong/corrupt in the prior settings.

Sounds like you have done everything. I would contact DLink support for an RMA, or get into a Rev B 825 or something new. I would go for a rev B 825.

Sadly - I'm past the warranty period.  The person on their support line said there is nothing they can do (not even a RMA).

No problem.  Was checking if anyone had any other ideas or suggestions.  I'm researching other routers and thinking of investing in a business-class router due to the number of clients and simultaneous sessions/connections that I have here.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help though.
