Swap my drives into another enclosure without reformatting?
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:53:11 AM »

Can I remove the drives from my existing DNS-323 and put them in another Linux-based NAS without reformatting (and still be able to access my data)?  A DNS-325 or 343 perhaps?  Recommendations?

I would be interested in other people opinions of NAS systems that might be compatible.  I know Buffalo also makes Linux-based NAS's, although they're based on the XFS filesystem.  The DNS-323 uses ext3, correct?

That would depend on the enclosure of your choice - AND - possibly the disk configuration you're using now.

You can swap between DNS-323's and I believe the DNS-343 (check the the 343 forum, I think I've seen it discussed there), I wouldn't bet on being able to do it with other brands.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
